Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.
the following is a link to all toxic foods for dogs and the reason why not to give it to them because they cause the following illnesses...

Just keep it to small quantities. There's a lot of interesting back and forth here about garlic, and the bottom line is that garlic is very dangerous to dogs in large quantities, but they rarely get quantities large enough to hurt them. As someone else posted, garlic is included in tons of commercial dog treats. I still try to keep it limited.
Bread and butter are also both junk food to a dog, so just keep it to a minimum and it's perfectly fine. If it disagrees with your dogs tummy, rest assured that you'll find out.

I don't think the garlic butter will do much harm but dogs are carnivores so need a meat diet or something equivalent so I think bread should be kept to the minimum

It won't hurt but your dog will get garlic breath and it can cause an increase in weight because of the butter. If it is just a bit it's ok.

i wouldnt have thought so, the butter would be okay as long as not given looooads! but the oils in it will help promote healthy glossy fur, and garlic is meant to be good for the heart, so no harm done really unless your dog has a weak stomach!
apart from bad breath, but to be fair, its probably an improvement!

It can cause an upset tummy. Any change in diet can cause this to one degree or another. Once in awhile shouldn't have long term effects. If it is an everyday thing it is not good. People food is much too rich for dogs. If Mum does not stop after you explain your concern for dogs health you can shame her into stopping. Every time you see her give dog people food say to dog in baby voice, "Look at you, conning mum into giving you that bread. You know it makes your tummy hurt". It did the trick for my aunt and my staffordshire terrier.

In small amount is is fine. However, both bread and butter can be dangerous in large amounts..You didn't say what breed or size the dog is, or how much she feeds it, but in general, a dog should have more then a tablespoon of any fat at one time, as it can bring on a pancreatic attack..Also, too much bread can upset the blood sugar balance, as it converts to sugar quickly..
However, in reasonable amounts, if the dog is not overweight, it is harmless..the small amount of garlic is fine, too..

I don't know if it's toxic to the dog or not, but it could definitely lead to the dog being unhealthily overweight. Stick to feeding your dog dog food and lay down the law with your boyfriend's mother.
