I need advice on night time toilet training my 4 yr old son?
I am having some issues with getting my son to get up in the night and use the bathroom. He sleeps so soundly that he will wet the bed and not wake up. He will be 5 in March.
HE is big for his age, and very very smart. I try to explain to him that he needs to get up when he feels like he is going to go pee, and use the potty (it is across the hall from his room). I leave the bathroom light on and a light in the hallway on also.
I have been trying waking himi up at night to go potty, and it works pretty well, but then I am tired from waking up every 2 or 3 hours to take him to the bathroom...
I have also tried setting an alarm in his room to go off every 3 hours to wake him up so he goes on his own with no luck.
I have him wearing pull ups at night because we dont have a washer and dryer in our home yet, and doing laundry every day was getting to be a bit too much for me...
any advice???

I have this problem with an older child I care for. I limit his drinks after 6 or 7. I have him go the bathroom before bed and then I wake him up before I go to bed. If I have to get up in the middle of the night to go the bathroom, I will again wake the child up so he can go after me. It works and is very low key. He doesn't remember me waking him and the bed doesn't get ruined.

I had this problem when i was his age and they told my mother that there was something wrong with me emotionally... That I was being traumatized by someone in the home which was not true...but they ended up finding out that it was a physical problem and needed to be treated with medicine... but if you dont think thats the problem then try not giving him any drinks after 7 or 8 at night and make sure he uses the restroom a few times before bed... but I would consult your doctor soon because if you dont the problem will worsen and this will never go away..I had problems until I was about 8...good luck to ur little one and u..

It is proven that boys bladders sometimes do not develop until they are older up to 8 to 9 years and some older. I have this problem with my family. My husband used to wet his bed when he was little, he is almost 50 now. His mother used to make him feel so badly about it, he'll never forget. She would put a diaper on him in front of company and say terrible things about him to try to make him feel bad about wetting the bed. My husband told me these things and when I had my son with my husband, guess what, he had the same problem. This is very common for boys, please don't ever make him feel bad for something he does not have control of as he is sleeping soundly. He does not know until it is over, he has no control of this. Keep up with the overnights until he appears to get up with them dry. The doctor may be able to help with medication. But, time will do it if you just bear with him.

my son was 2 when we started him potty taining at night, I make sure he does not have anything to drink at night. NOTHING, i will let him have a drink or two of my water with dinner, but he does not get his own cup, i find when he does he wets the bed, he goes to bed at 9pm and right before i go to bed 11-12 i put him on the potty again, and usually he goes.

This has worked for us, but he is still very young and does have accidents , but when he does i notice its when i stray from our routine!

Good luck!

I've done a lot of research and a lot of books and parenting mags say that children don't have the ability to tell for nighttime pee until after 6 y/o. Just make sure that you have his bed protected. I really like spraying vinegar on the mattress to get the urine smell out. Febreeze just smelled like flowery urine. Vinegar in the wash will get the smell out of the bed clothes (also works for sweaty pit smell).

It is normal for him to wet at night. Some kids wet until they are 8 or 9. Keep using the pull ups and NEVER be negative about his wetting.
