sadly many of us find ourselves in street fights not of our making - despite many years of martial art training (and running away from as many real fights as i can!) I have found that the most effective way to end a fight quickly and with minimal damage to me and my attacker is a head butt to the bridge of the nose and several hard knees to the groin - at that stage I can usually run away! what's your experience ??? by the way I still advocate the run away technique whenever possible!!

The law says use the minimum force needed. You have to decide the level of risk. There is an old saying "It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6". Do what it takes to protect yourself, but don't get carried away. I don't get into the situations you describe. Maybe the fact that I'm nearing the end of my 6th decade on this planet has something to do with that. If you find yourself in these types of confrontation frequently, you probably need to reevaluate your life style.

As usual Yupchagee is on target, more of us should listen to him.

Dave will have to tell us how to get our opponents to stand still while we side kick their knees.

I will be all for hearing that one.

Situational awareness is what we are talking about here.

I have been in many bar fights. Most of them, I knew they were coming and I wanted them. I am older now and have no desire to fight on the street.

But there are young fools, such as I was that will want to fight. You need to know how to see this coming.

There are strikes that I have learned, and some that I have developed. Most are very dangerous and should only be used as a last resort.

There is one in particular that will work well for a person your size. I have opened my e-mail. But I will soon close it. Ask if you are interested and I will help you.

try to study an art that teaches street fighting. you cant say the best way to end a street fight is to do this......... because every fight is different. if it were as simple as that anyone could be an instructor. not that a headbutt and a kick to the balls isn't effective but, would you head but and groin kick if your opponent had a knife, probably not with out getting shanked. study some of Bruce lees teachings he always said to be like water.

Dave's fotowerks is right. A correctly placed side kick to the knee with sufficient power will cripple the attacker/ or defender easily. And since most of them expect some type of upper body hit they block for that and don't guard their lower body.

Attempting to run right away could be innefective, but it depends on the situation. Sometimes you might need to incapacitate an aggressive criminal before you can go anywhere. Unless you are Michael Johnson(the track and field runner) who would be gone by the time the aggressive person looks down to grab their pistol....

A good kick to the side of one's knee works wonders. Right at the joint. *pop*
