the hightest up pad on the leg has sliced almost off about a quater of it, its bleeding but not that much, ive seen worse on my stupid dog! I'm not too worried and have bandaged it up until morning and she seems fine. has anyone had any experience of this will it need to be stitched back on urgently or does she not need it. would it be ok for her to loose a small part of it. i'm a bit stuck as to the importance on the top pad, i thought they were just like thick skin. some advice please.

THANKS JULIE T BUT IF I DID CUT MYSELF I WOULD ACTUALLY BANDAGE IT UP RATHER THAN SITTING IN A&E FOR A CUT. IDIOT.

DONT GET ME WRONG I WILL TAKE HER TO THE VETS IN THE MORN. ITS JUST THAT ITS LATE ITS HALF HOUR DRIVE TO THE DOGGY HOSPITAL IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWWHERE. COSTS 70 QUID JUST TO BE SEEN NOT INCLUDING ANY TREATMENT AND SHES BEEN SO MANY FLIPPIN TIMES FOR SIMILAR THINGS I'M STARTING TO THINK MY DAFT DOG LIKES GOING TO THE VETS. IF IT WAS PORING OUT WITH BLOOD THEN I WOULD GO NOW BUT ITS WRAPPED UP NOW AND NOT BLEEDING VERY MUH AT ALL. UNLIKE A PREVOIUS OCASION WHEN IT WAS DRIPPING LIKE A TAP! ALL I WANTED TO KNOW WAS WOULD IT MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE IF I TOOK HER IN THE MORN.

This may be a common problem that you may be on about, the Dew Claw- this is located on the upper part of the leg.
In some breeds this Dew claw is removed to prevent any injury's.
Take your dog to the vet-They may recommend that you have them removed.
Best of luck XX

Pad injuries are very common. If it's something that needs stitches then off to the vet you go, but otherwise a good cleaning with peroxide and some neosporin will do the job. If you are referring to the dewclaw pad that doesn't get any weight bearing then you're in luck. The worst part of pad tears is usually that they have to walk on them and they re-injure them. NuSkin (available from the drug store) actually worked wonders for us, too...kept it sealed up so it could heal.

Good luck!

I do know that sometimes cuts that are deep and wide do need to be sutured. The reason is to prevent infection and also to bring the cut area back together so no other problems are created. If it was my dog and the cut was deep and wide I would check with my veterinarinan just to make sure a suture is not needed. Because if your dog starts to have problems with movement in the future it could really upset your dogs lifestyle and your lifestyle, So if you have any doubts please check with your veterinarian. Hope things turn out okay for you!

if its not bleeding too much that good. most pad/paw or nail injuries do bleed.
i wouldn't imagine it would need stitching and will be fine until you go to the vets.
monitor for heamorrhage, keep it clean, covered and prevent the animal knocking it.
insure the bandage is not too tight this is very easy to do. leave a few toes visible at the bottom. these should be pink and warm. this will ensure good circulation.

if its not bleeding and shes not bothered by it, then just keep it clean and covered if you go out. you will also need to wrap it up if she starts licking at it as she will just stop it from healing. if it starts to look yukky take her to the vet and maybe get some antibiotics, but otherwise just treat it as you would if you had cut yourself. (ie not panicking and running off to the hospital to waste everybodys time).

My old Dogue de Bordeaux sliced about half of hers clean off, and she was fine. no vets needed either.

some people just havent got the sense they were born with and bother the vet with ridiculous little things, dont listen to them.

my akita cut her big pad on her front paw, it was horrible, my partner cleaned it up the best he could and covered it up with a bandage, it bled loads. but its just a thing that happens, how many dogs in the world do it? it eventually stopped bleeding as she cleaned it herself most times, we didnt take her to the vet and she was totally fine.

I know you are stressed about this, but i would take her to the vet straight away if i were you, she might get an infection in there, or need stitches.

You're going to need to at least contact the vet and tell him/her what has happened. If it's deep definitely get the vet. If it's not it has the ability to get infected, so still get the vet.

As narnolls vn said it will probably be ok but depending on what the cut was from it might be worth getting an anti tetanus jab,if your dog isn't already covered.

dry it and if you have any antibiotic powder, sprinkle it over the wound. Some dogs manage on 3 legs.
