I have a young female cousin (24 years old) who has been in a persistent coma for almost 3 years now. I see her parents very infrequently and don't know if the polite thing to do is to ask about her, or not even mention her (which seems a little strange, but don't want to rock the boat.) The last time I asked (about 1 year ago) her mother began crying and I felt terrible.

Keep asking- she's still part of their lives and you should ask and acknowledge her. I'm sure although it may be painful for her parents when you ask about her sometimes they would rather that then everyone pretending she doesn't exist.

As a cousin and neice, you have the right to now. Ask your aunt kindly and with hope for her health. Or, get another family member to find out for you (thats what I do!)

In not asking, like I'm sure a lot of people, it's like her baby is forgotten. By asking you are keeping her memory and love alive, and I am sure her family really do need to hear someone else say her name. Keep it up!!

you should try to make a little time every month or so to visit your cousin your aunt probobly doesn't know what to say but if you visit you won't have to ask just give them a hug and ask how they are

Eventhough the mother cried, I am sure she appreciated your concern. Keep asking.
