Propecia is just so expensive. I would like to get the 5mg Proscar and divide it in 4 and take one every day (I hear it works just as well). I see that 30 pills for Proscar cost around $60, compared to $60 for Propecia: four times as cheap.

Also, is Proscar reimbursed by insurance? Thanks!

you will need to ask your doctor to change the prescription from propecia to proscar.
Most insurance will pay part of the cost of generic medications.

So you would only be taking 1.25mg a day instead of 5mg? I would talk to my doctor before dropping your dosage that drastically. I doubt it would work as well. If you talk to your doctor about the cost of your med I'm sure he/she will know how to write the prescriptions to help you pay less. The doctor may write it for 10mg so you can get 2 months worth out of 30 pills. Also make sure its a med that can be broken, some are dangerous if crushed or broken. If you have prescription drug insurance it will be covered. If your not sure call your insurance company. Hope this helps.

The generic version of a drug is always cheaper. Your insurance company will charge you less for it.
The recommended minimum dose for Proscar for benign prostatic hypertrophy is 5mg per day, and the recommended dose for those with Alopecia androgenetica is 1mg per day. Those doses have been proven to work. Taking anything less is bad.

assuming you can successfully cut the pills into quarters you will be just fine.

By the way, "tina" is wrong about pharmacies being compelled by Federal Law to dispense the cheapest available medicine. Pharmacies can fill whatever they want.....which is usually the cheapest available generic. But it is not Federal Law.

Talk to your pharmacist.

If you have a prescription and take it to the pharmacy, they are required by federal law to fill it with the lowest cost equivalent available, unless your doctor says not to.
