If I were invited, I'd assume that the food would be taken care of since I was a guest.

You could just cook dinner for everyone and have them over to your house (with your parents ok). That way it wouldn't cost as much.
Otherwise, just let everyone know that you want them to come to dinner but will not be able to pay for dinner. To offset the cost of the meal, tell them that you do not expect presents. The dinner surrounded by your friends will be a gift enough.

Best to work it out ahead of time with your best friend. Have him/her do the inviting and let the group know that as a gift to you, they'll be splitting YOUR meal. How's that for a birthday present??
Happy Birthday!

I think if you invite someone to a Birthday meal they will assume you are hosting the party and will foot the bill

Our friends invite us to celebrate with them and we don't assume that they will pay. To be safe, however, I would be upfront with my friends. Let them know that you would like to celebrate with them, and tell them that gifts are not necessary. Explain that everyone would pay for their own meal. It may not feel comfortable to say it, but if they are really your friends they will understand. Happy Birthday!

Everyone should pay for their own meal and split the cost of yours. Heck, It's your birthday!! If they don't, they are a sorry group of friends.

I would just say, "hey it's my birthday. Let's all go out." I think if you put it that way, everyone would pay for their own.

depends on how you word it...if you say "come to a party" or "join me for dinner" or "birthday dinner"....any of those could be interpreted as the meals on you.....if you say "would you like to meet for dinner" or "dutch treat birthday dinner" then most people will know to bring their own cash
