Although I don't know much about your MOS specifically I'll put down a couple of things.

Here are some things to know about going to AIT after Basic Training.
1. Have your uniforms and boots looking GREAT. They expect you to look professional in AIT. Not so much in basic training. THey don't make you shine your boots in basic or press your uniforms. In AIT it is expected. Be squared away before you arrive.
2. AIT isn't necessairly easier than basic training. Like I said above you are expected to know how to act like a soldier now and they definatly enforce the rules! You are given no slack through AIT. I found AIT to be at least twice as physically and mentally demanding than basic training.
3. Don't expect to get weekends off. Alot of your time off is going to depend on how well you do during the week. If you screw up in inspections don't expect the drill sgts to let you out for the weekend. Yes you still have Drill sgts in AIT.

Im not a 91H but I do work next to them. I dont know how there ait is but its long enough for you to probably get driving privleges before you leave. And you can only be stationed in select bases around the world like. Ft Jackson S.C(real chill) Ft. Eustis V.A\(Heard they have three shifts going 24 hours a day no organized P.T,Ft Sam houston another 24 hour operation..Pray you get this one Ft Sam is the ****. Ft hood wich you dont want cuz you can get put in a field unit and you dont want that. South Korea you can only get stationed where Im at in camp carroll, The unit isnt that bad or 1 slot in camp humphreys which I doubt you would get...I dont know where in Germany you can get stationed But hopefully for you depending where youre from you want Ft. Jackson or Ft. Sam houston Aka(party town) Also if you want to make Sergeant In 2 to 3years..Stay in Shape dont screw up, And as soon as you get a chance in A.I.T start doing Correspondence courses at...search google for the army distance learning and do as many courses for this will give you up to 200 points military ed and in youre mos your gonna need them. Good luck to you and try not to get an attitude with the drills theyre ***** but there just trying to weed out the week. Take care.

Sounds like you picked a good field. Just make sure that you end up in a general hospital unit, and not a field hospital unit. In a general hospital unit, you will end up spending a lot of time in tent and will rarely work in the field you trained in. If you can get assigned to a general hospital, like Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston Texas or DD Eisenhower General Hospital at Fort Gordon, Georgia, then I can assure you that you will work in optometry. The Army has a tendency to say you will be slotted in a position, then assign you a truck to take care of when your optometry unit deploys to the field. Also, take Travis R advice.
