I am 17 and I currently not dating. And the reason why I don't date is I don't believe that I am ready for it. So I am wondering why that so many young people date with no intentions of getting married. And that they are not ready for it. Dating is a period of time to get to know your would be spouse. And why do they also do it for having a sense of security e.g. you have a boyfriend or girlfriend just because other people have a special relationship.

I can understand that question. I have wondered that for a long time. I agree with you on everything. People should date with the intent of finding a spouse. Unfortunately what they should do and what they do are two different things. Most teens date because their immature and they don't really understand the purpose of dating. If they do understand and can be mature about it that's fine, but usually not the case. So pretty much they date because they don't know what their doing and they think it's cool. Understanding the actual purpose of dating shows a lot of maturity and rationality. By the way I didn't start dating until I was nearly 17 because I wasn't ready for it. I feel I am mature enough to date now and I do date with the intent of marriage. In fact I have only ever had 1 boyfriend the only reason I'm not married to him yet is because he is going on a two year mission for church, during which time we must be unmarried. I will wait and marry him as soon as he comes home. If your not ready for dating yet that's fine, it's really good that you can be so realistic and realize what you are and aren't ready for.

Im 15 but ive always been told that I'm mature for my age. I have a bf right now (my 3rd) and we've been going out for nearly 4 months. I've known him for 3 yrs now and I seriously couldn't see myself without him. Even if we aren't dating in the future, we promised eachother we'd stay friends. I know that sounds stupid and weird and you are probably thinking to yourself "yeah right" but if we dont beleive in happy endings, then what do I have to live for?
For some having a bf or gf may be just because everyone else has one, but for some others it could be a popularity issue (trying to get with someone who is more popular than you so you can be popular too) or mayybe they just feel lonely. Who knows? And some people just have "crushes" and mistake that for love. If you dont find out what heartbreak is like and what "crushes" are like then how will you know what you like in a person in the future? How will you be able to know that someone is the one if you've never dated anyone before? Thats what I think.... hope you like my essay. :-)

Dating need not have anything to do with spouse hunting. It may for you, but for many it does not. Teens dating is a way for them to socialize with the opposite sex and start learning about more 'adult' relationships...

...many teens jump into dating/sex because of peer pressure and hormones...and some are mislead to believe that having a girlfriend or boyfriend is what one should do.

It's okay for teens to "date" when they've reached a certain maturity level...sex should wait until they've reached the maturity level to deal with any possible consequences (pregnancy, stds, etc).

But there's no marriage requirement at any age...and many adults date and enjoy the company of their 'partner' without ever considering marrying them...it's simply not necessary...many people desire to have a partner to share Life with, an intimate companion...but whether they ever marry or not is of no issue...it's entirely up to them...

I feel its cause everyone is doing it, so they want to feel part of the crowd. Plus there bored and curious but thats good u feel your not ready theres no rush beleive me. And when your ready that person will have more respect for u cause it takes alot of strength to wait its not easy when your 17. most of the girls that are dating right now are going to be used and abused and what nice good looking guy wants that for a girlfriend.

I am 16.. and have found a love that burns stronger than i would have ever expected... I started dating my loved one when I was 15, and she 14... we both showed interests in one another, and soon things became more.. and unexpectedly, i realised that I loved this girl..... we are now engaged to be married next winter... your question asked "when they are not ready for it" and I guess my answer would be, sometimes they aren't ready for it.. but how will they ever know without doing anything to find out?..... you must explore something before you can know it.

I am 17 as well. And I believe that people need to date before they get married so that they can find out exactly want the person needs, wants and deserves. Dating before you get married helps with all of that. So I think you are over exagurating! And should stop asking obvious questions.

Good perspective, but the problem is that most people date to make themselves feel better and to have sex, just to feel important or desirable or whatever. But i agree with you.

well i have a relationship because i love a girl, i'm not gonna stop it and hope to meet up with her when i'm 20-something.. it depends on you, if you think that you aren't ready for it, then don't date, you don't HAVE to, but if you truly love the person, you should
