You are right that neither are good. But I would say a cigarette because it effects your lungs in a way that can become permanent, making you unable to participate in even the simplest aerobic activity. At least with trans fat, though still not good at all, the side effects aren't as well documented and detrimental.

If you want my opinion, neither is good for your health. If you can give up both, you'd be doing yourself a big favor. You may be looking for justification to continue with one or the other, but you won't get that from me. I can maybe make you less intrigued, by saying that eating something with trans fat or smoking one cigarette a week won't hurt you in the short term, but it's the cumulative effect of these harmful habits that can do you in. You have given up the fats, so it shouldn't be too hard to give up that weekly cigarette. I commend you for your efforts. Good luck!

The cigarette is worse. Because your body does not need any cigarettes and they only do bad. On the contrary, the body needs some fat, just small quantities, and of course unsaturated is better, but butter and so on do have some vitamins, so small quantities like you mentioned won't hurt you.

Cigarette. The hysteria about trans fat is based on junk science.

The nice thing about trans fats is they will increase your chance of dying but will not increase my chance if I am sitting in a restaurant near you. Cigarettes would impact me too..

One cigarette per week would probably not hurt you -- if you could actually keep it to one. The problem with this idea is that nicotine is one of the most addictive substnces known to man. If you get depressed or have a couple of drinks, the urge is to have more than one a week -- then more than one a day.
The prudent action is to keep away from them completely.

my doctor said its always better to have a little cushion than to smoke
you can lose the fat easier than remove the tar from your lungs
the damage to your lungs is more long term
