As someone else has already said, they can be a trigger for serious mental illnesses; depression, schizophrenia, mania etc if say you are already biologically predisosed to such an illness. The other thing of course is that if a person is on drugs they may engage in more risky behaviours i.e. unprotected sex etc which leads to a whole other kettle of fish or they may do something like walk out in front of a car. Not exactly a direct illness but an indirect consequence.

It is a subject that is prone to 'misinformation' but you have hit the jackpot as I am considered by many to be 'perhaps Ireland's leading civil expert on drugs'.
There is a huge variety of 'illnesses' caused by drug abuse and in this case the term 'drugs' include tobacco and alcohol and these days when I write or speak to people about the subject - I say 'alcohol and other drugs'.
It is with great sadness that over a period of almost 30 years, I have seen so many young lives destroyed by drugs.
The most important thing to note is 'that connection' between mental health and addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
Because I don't know you in person - I suggest that you consult a good GP and in addition take careful note of pubic information issued by health authorities regarding the subject.
If you take drugs - they may trigger 'underlying mental health conditions' including the use of cannabis and with people who already are known to suffer mental health problems - the use of drugs 'all drugs' may cause the user to become suicidal.
This is in addition to many other illnesses that occur with drug use and then there is the community/ family concern.

For exemple, Cocaine side effects can include twitching, paranoia, and impotence, which usually increases with frequent usage.

With excessive dosage the drug can produce hallucinations, paranoid delusions, tachycardia, itching, and formication.

Overdose causes tachyarrhythmias and a marked elevation of blood pressure. These can be life-threatening, especially if the user has existing cardiac problems.

(Any) Drug abuse is an open-door for many kind of illnesses!
Have your pick!

Mental diseases, various, diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, eventual blindness via the diabetes, swollen legs, septicaemia and death, not necessarily in that order. If you are taking drugs stop it, if you are not taking drugs don't start. There are lots of leaflets with information regarding drugs and their side effects at your surgery. Go and get them. Abuse of drugs does not only affect the taker, but the family too and causes stress to all members thereof.
