Trying to decide where to get my infant daughter's ears pierced.
What are the advantages of a doctor over the mall? Please share ur experience. I live in the peninsula(los altos) of the bay area(SFO).

The advantage the doctor has over the mall is less risk of cross contamination. But I have rarely found doctors who do this. You probably will have to take her to the unsafe and unclean mall to have it done.

I say, wait until she is older and if she wants the earrings, take her to a professional piercer and get them done. That way her ears will have grown a bit more and there is less risk of the piercings being crooked or uneven.

Peircing an infant's ears can be dangerous and, since earlobes grow throughout your entire life, by the time your little girl is fifteen, she might have terribly lopsided piercings. I'd recommend waiting until she's seven or eight -When I worked at the Limited Too, we wouldn't peirce that young because the company refused to, citing the growth problem. If you insist on doing it anyway, it honestly probably doesn't really matter- a lot of places in the mall won't do it to a baby, they don't want to assume the risk, whereas doctors seem to have no problem mutilating children.
By the way--infection has much less to do with where you get it done than how the aftercare is. At the mall, each earring used to peirce is kept in a sterilized, individually packaged container and employees are required to wear gloves. Infection generally occurs as a result of poor care afterwards.

The most logical answer would be the doctor, but I got my ears pierced at the mall, at Claire's, and I've had no problems in the 5 years I've had them. And getting them pierced at the mall is most likely less expensive. However, I would not recommend getting an infant's ears pierced. It should be the daughter's decision if she wants to get them. So wait until she's older, probably atleast 7 years old and if she wants them, go ahead and let her get them.

I would get it done at the doctor because the last time i got my ears peirced (2nd hole) i got it done at the mall and they got infected. The doctor will probably know more about sterilizing and will be able to tell you how to take care of it better than the people at the mall too.

A doctor's office is the safest choice. I don't really like pierced ears on infants. I find myself looking at the earrings rather then the baby's beauty!!!

My opinion would be that the mall people have more experience. It would matter more how well you keep it clean afterwards. Also, if you have a Wal Mart in your area, they were selling earpiercing kits for around $10. That way you would know the instruments were sterile.

My mom decided to get my ears pierced when I was a baby, and she went to the doctors. He messed up and what looks like my second piercing was my first. She went to the mall (Claries) and they did it. I just got another piercing done there and they sterlized everything in front of me, so its perfectly safe.

really you should wait until she is old enough to decide for herself if she wants holes in her ears!
