WOW - that's all I can say is WOW.

If you're going to discontinue taking Xanax, you MUST do it in a controlled enviornment, such as a hospital or detox center. At this point, you are at a high risk for life threatening seizures if you discontinue improperly.

The only way you can quit Xanax is with Xanax. This means that you have to be put on a taper schedule where they lower your dose over a long period of time. You'll have to be monitored durring this process so you don't end up choking on your own tongue. Extreme? Abosultely!

Rehab is not for you? Ok - keep on doing what you're doing.

Xanax + booze is the worst combination of substances you can use. I've had a 4 month run on Xanax and booze and I can't remember much, except I pissed off a **** load of people and woke up in strange places.

The reason why it's dangerous is because Xanax is a benzodiazepine. This type of drug modulates your GABA neurotransmitters, which applies an inhibitory function of your CNS (central nervous system). If you take too much Xanax and drink, when you pass out, you've slipped into a COMA, yes a drug induced COMA (which is how they knock people out before surgery). The coma won't kill you, but you've disabled your bodies ability to get rid of the toxic booze (you can't puke). So while you're knocked out, the booze can kill you.

Additionally, once you're addicted to Xanax, it doesn't last that long, which is how you built up a 14mg tolerance (which is enough for some people to knock them out before surgery). Since Xanax escapes your system so fast, you experience withdrawal immediately. Combine booze and you become a restuless motherF--ker full of pent up rage!

Don't test yourself - get professional help.

I go to a center for substance abuse therapy and there are two guys in my group who have gone to rehab for this. They have been through so much and it's taken them a long time to get their life back together.

Start rehab NOW and you'll be back to normal much sooner. Email me if you need help getting started

Wow, that is a lot of Xanax to be taking every day. And mixing with alcohol. I think you already are aware that this is a recipe for disaster. You really need to be weaned off the Xanax (don't stop it cold turkey, especially on that high of a dose, it could cause seizures.) Rehab sounds like a very good idea...it may help you get your life back. I know the whole idea of it is a bit overwhelming and intimidating, but I think it is critical that you do this.

Getting clean should help alleviate the depression, at least to some degree (as both Xanax and alcohol can make depression worse.)

It's good that you are seeing a psychiatrist, but it sounds like you would benefit more from some cognitive-behavioral therapy with a good therapist.

go to rehab. I have been clean for over 34 years and it changed my life. We did not have rehab back then you(I) did it cold turkey at a friends house. I believe that is the only reason I am alive today

Of course, go to rehab in January if you can't get in before then.....but for right NOW, you need to be going to AA meetings. Every day. You have GOT to stop drinking before you kill yourself or someone else. Imagine sitting in jail for the rest of your life....think THAT won't depress the crap out of you?

Find a meeting:

It's never too late to go to rehab unless you are dead and keep mixing alcohol with any kind of drug..rx or OTC and you may be.
