Advent does start on Sunday. We are not required to abstain from meat on Fridays during advent. Just during Lent, which is the time of preparation leading up to Easter. Ember days are the week after the third Sunday in Advent. Abstinence is felt by many Catholics to be a small sacrifice to help them in preparation for upcoming feast days like Christmas. Many Catholics abstain from meat year round.

Why ask only Catholics, when so many other denominations celebrate Advent, as well? I'm Episcopalian, and am looking forward to Advent. However, I don't abstain from meat during Advent, but only on Fridays during Lent.

Yes, Advent starts on Sunday (well, techincally, Saturday night after sunset - one of the few holdovers to Jewish tradition).
The abstaining from meat that you are talking about is for Lent, which is the 6 weeks leading up to Easter. It used to be the Catholics abstained from meat on ALL Fridays of the year, but that isn't very common anymore.
[and after I type this I see Jennifer's comment - guess it's more common than I had thought]

Yes, Advent starts this Sunday, December 3rd.
The Catholic Church follows the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.
Fasting is one of the three methods of interior penance along with prayer and almsgiving.
Catholics are only required to fast during Lent but many voluntarily fast during Advent and some even year round.
Fridays were chosen because Jesus died for us on Good Friday.
With love in Christ.

yes indeed Advent begins on the 1st Sunday of Dec: and yes you should fast if you are able, and for those who do not agree with or understand why Catholics fast, it is in honor of the Lords poverty and to prepare the spirit during Advent.
