I have very dark, long hair that I would like to lighten. How do you lighten dark hair and get the color even on the top and the bottom? My hair will lighten just fine at the top, but the bottom doesn't take too well. I have even applied the dye at the bottom first and left it on for awhile before applying it on the top. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd rather do it myself instead of going to the salon. I've had some bad experiences at the salon and am afraid to go back.

I would understand doing it yourself if you were going from light to dark, but you NEED a pro for dark to light. I've had a bad salon experience too, but don't let that scare you away. Ask your girlfriends where they go, and pay attention to the building itself. Sloppy decor and lack of cleanliness are good signs for a bad dye. Don't be afraid to ask the colorist how long she's been doing it if you've never visited her before. Good luck!

go to a pro. Box color is not as good quality as professional salon dye. Plus, the colorist will be able to make your hair evenly colored.

Eeveryone tells me to go to a salon too, because I have medium brown hair with blonde highlights...but I want to go blonde by doing it myself since I know its not impossible...maybe you should try goin to a beauty supply like Sally's Beauty Supply...good luck and let me know how it goes!
