I think for the most part it's because they can't see what they're doing wrong. They don't realize it when they sound pushy, condescending, or brainwashed. When others direct their anger/frustration/cynism at these people then, they feel that their critics must be showing a hatred of God. They associate themselves so closely with the message of God, that they don't realize when people are simply unhappy with them.
Considering a person can pray to God anywhere at any time in their own heart, I don't see abolishing public prayer in school to be 'turning one's back on God.' Rather, as you say, it's turning your back on other human beings because you're refusing to listen to them and respect their (non)beliefs.
Good question. There are some people out there who genuinely hate God, but these are rare. Genearlly, people are either for him or don't believe in him. Therefore as Christians we should accept responsibility for our own words and actions by taking the blame for our own bad reputation. If the blame is justified, then we should take this to heart and change our ways. If the blame is unjustified, then we are suffering on account of our beliefs, and our faithfulness will be rewarded.

Hey you hit it right on the head!!
Their God does not hate, does not push away or criticise non believers. In fact if Christians read their Bible he is supposed to be a pretty inclusive God. Even to the point of preferring to save sinners rather than anyone else!!
It is people that hate, Dictate, feel exclusive, self serving etc. Those are the bad Christians. Sadly although there are probably many very good, tolerant, inclusive and loving Christians, they hide their light under a bushel and leave the extremists and zealots to destroy the credibility of the religion they love.

It's a debating technique that places them in the "victim's" role, and they then get to claim some sort of immunity from logic.
"Hate" is such an emotionally provocative word that it turns an intellectual argument into an emotional one, and no one will ever win an emotional argument.
It's the equivalent of bending your wrist back in an arm wrestling contest. It's cheating, but if it's the only trick you know, sometime you'll do it just to pretend you've got more strength than you truly have.

Joh 7:7 The world cannot hate you; but it hates Me because I witness about it, that its works are evil.
Joh 15:18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it has hated you.
Joh 15:19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
Joh 15:20 Remember the Word which I said to you, A slave is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted Me, they also will persecute you. If they kept My Word, they also will keep yours.
1Jo 3:13 Do not marvel, my brothers, if the world hates you.

It's because Christians have been programmed to think of everything in black and white. If you don't love God, you hate God. There is no middle ground with them.
I really don't have any feelings for God, because I don't believe he exists. I do have feelings about Christians, though.

the bible sates, I believe in Matthew, that if someone is offended or criticizes a Christian it is really God they are offend or mad at.
It's not us saying it, it's God who said it.
