Does anyone know what kind of compensation the birthmother gets in adoption, I noticed that people trying to adopt pay alot but does the money go to the birthmother to help with things or does the birthmother just give them the child and the money goes to the agency?

most of it goes to the agency but sometimes the adoptive parents pay for the birthmoms medical care. I had a good friend who while we were in high school got pregnant and decided to let a couple adopt her child. She did a private adoption and the couple paud for her medical and even took her shoppinh for maturnity clothes and paid for professional photos of my friend so when the baby is older she will have photos to refer to. I think rules vary by agency too. Unlike someone said above: birthmoms are not suppose to receive any money because that is illegal.

The birthmother does not get paid. That would be selling a baby and is illegal! Agencies make money placing babies. We have started the adoption process privately and depending on the state, we will only be allowed to pay all the birthmom's legal and medical expenses. Some states allow rent, living expenses and money for maternity clothes, but it is very limited and in some states not allowed by law at all. Our attorney told me that even meeting a birthmom and buying her lunch or dinner could be miscontrued as coersion and should be avoided. Buying her coffee or dessert would be OK though.

That is why I am adopting independently. The fees some agencies charge are outrageous and they vary from situation to situation with caucasian babies having the highest fees. It's possible for adoptive parents to spend less than $10,000 on an adoption if they search for their own birthmother and avoid an agency.

On behalf of adoptive families everywhere to all birthmothers - thank you. Please be comforted to know that you are quite literally the answer to a happy couple's prayers.

Laws vary from state to state, the one constant is that it is illegal to sell a baby. State laws govern the amount a birthmother can receive. Most of the money goes to the adoption agency. The birthmother can get money for medical bills, living expenses and groceries. Most states have a limit, most states require the money to actually go through a middleman such as an attorney or licensed agency.

I am a birthmother. I placed my son in with his family in an open adoption at birth, by choice when I was 19..

The only benefits I got was a small weekly stipend for food, toiletries. Help with maternity clothing, and my healthcare was covered by state insurance.

Domestic adoptions can range from 10,000 to 30,000. And Believe me, I never ever expected any of that money...just a good home for my son.

It depends on the agreement that has been made. Usually, in private adoption, the money pays for her medical bills and transportation. If you get into exchanging money for the child, that is against the law, basically.

Many agencies are non profit - the extra expense goes to cover things like office expenses, rent, utilities, office supplies and covers salaries for office staff.
