Ok, well I got of the school bus again to find the 4th abandon cat at our house. We've always had animals dropped off at our house, and have had 10 stray dogs!
This cat is unlike anyother though. She is jet black, with green eyes. She meaws constantly and we've fed her twice. To my suprise, her and my female dog got along instantly. She came to my dad last night, she jumped on the door and was clinging there when he found her.
The thing is, we just adopted a calico kitten and her and the stray cat (whom I am thinkin' about naming Misty) are NOT getting along. They hissed, and then they began some growling thing. I'm a dog person, but I would love to help this kitty. She looks healthy. But why is she meawing so much? And how can I help her and Cali our other kitty get along?
Thanks!
Also, my dad insits on letting her stay outside because she has THICK claws and a THICK coat. He says she may like it better out there since she's been out there for more than likley her entire life.

Cats do not usually get along right from the start. They do have a social order, and the hissing and growling, even some swatting is normal when they first meet. It is their way of establishing who will be boss.

I can sympathize with being the drop off point for unwanted animals. I seem to get the cats here. As long as there is a place for this new cat to get shelter from the weather, maybe an insulated dog house with something in to snuggle in, it might be fine to keep it outside. Heck, at least you are feeding it. Sounds like a lot better situation than it had before. If that cat is so nice to your Dad, in time, he may relent and allow it in. Don't push him too hard. Just let things run their course. Cats are very skilled at winning people over.

First off, your dad's wrong; kitty has NOT been outside her entire life! No feral cat would approach a human like kitty approached your dad, nor would a feral attempt to get inside a human house. And no feral cat would get along right away with a dog! Ferals are far too wary and skittish for for any of that!

This is obviously a cat that's been thoroughly socialized to humans and human families, including dogs, and she hasn't been on her own very long. If she had been she would've begun to lose her sociability.

Since she hasn't been on her own very long, she hasn't had much chance to learn to fend for herself. Kitty is definitely in need of rescue and an an indoor home.

I think maybe-Misty and your kitten will get along in time. Calicos are notorious for their "cattitude" and if she was an adult I'd say they might never get along. But kittens are adaptable and she may look up to (maybe) Misty once she gets used to her being around.

As for (possibly) Misty's meowing, some cats are very vocal, so she may just be a friendly girl who likes to talk a lot. Sometimes a lot of vocalization can indicate health issues, like hyperthyroid, but sometimes it means nothing at all except that you have a talkative kitty.

Wouldn't it be better to complain to animal control that people are dropping off animals at your house?

Cats will eventually find their places with each other. Some get along well, some tolerate each other kind of, and some just do not like each other and never will. Only time and patience will tell.

You're really saints for taking in all of these stray animals, it's not fair to you though and you should find a way to try to get it to stop.

Good luck.

Well, she could be in heat- but she could also be telling you "thanks" for being so kind to her and for the food. When we found out that the male (neutered) black & white cat hanging around our house had been abandoned, we took him in. For the first few weeks, he was very talkative- ever since then he's been quieter.

As for the kitties getting along, the first thing to do is make sure everyone is spayed/neutered. That will reduce the territoral stuff. Mostly though, give equal attention to all and have patience! They will learn to live with each other eventually.

I wouldn't recommend having a cat outdoors because God forbid something happens to her. Also outdoor cats have a dramatic cut of a life span than an indoor cat. Besides getting hit by a car, they are most likely to be attacked by another animal and/or have a disease. I wouldn't say declawing either because that's just torture. That's like you walking on your knuckles once your fingers were amputated. Horrible. If both cats are of the same sex, that can be the problem. My "mother in law" has 2 cats and they are both females. One can't get along with the other so the other one just tends to keep her distance. It hasn't bothered my mother in law at all.

Also if she's meowing a lot and rubbin on things alot can mean she's in heat. Just get her spayed.

You can't save the world but I greatly appreciate the fact that you care about the animals. I have 2 smoky black kittens with big green eyes that I have been feeding for days now. For the last two days they haven't been around or eaten any of the food I left out for them. Sometimes animals just figure out the best for themselves and go on but I wish you luck with your kitties and puppies.

I'll keep it short and sweet. If you can, catch her, feed her, and take her to a cat shelter (no-kill ). It's the best thing you can do for her, and your calico. You calico is new to the family, why add more stress ?? If you don't know of any cat shelter, call local vets, petsmarts and whatnot- they have cat shelters adopting cats there on a regular basis, so just ask for a #.

some cats, just like some people can never get along. Even though they might occasionally hiss, eventually they should just settle down and avoid each other
