Here is your answer.

Temptations and triggers are a product of electrochemical behavior in the brain and learned behaviors that we've developed from our enviornment over a long period of time.

An example of a "trigger" is a sense of accomplishment. So you're at work and you've brought in a huge client. From your enviornment, you've learned to celebrate your success by going out for a drink.

Now here's what goes on in your brain.

Whenever you experience an unexpected reward, your brain sends out Dopamine. This is an electrochemical messenger that is central to the brains "rewards" system. While it comes out, you get the feeling of pleasure from the unexpected reward.

Now you're happy, so you drink to celebrate your happiness. The alcohol works on a neurotransmitter called GABA, which is the inhibitory neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous System. Alcohol will modulate the GABA, which will lesson stress and anxiety (coin frase, lowering your inhibitions). You are now more relaxed and enjoy your happiness more through alcohol.

Your brain remembers the chemical events which have occured and therefore effects your cognition (thoughts). So whenever you're around booze, your brain remembers and there's where the temptation comes from.

Celebration of accomplishment is a "trigger" which we learn from our enviornment.

People who are compulsive (don't know how to say no to themselves), develop addictions to substances for this reason as the brains reward system is quite strong and hard to deny.
