i studied japanese and speak with japanese people and i believe that the correct pronounciation is monga. in the japanese alphabet, ma is pronounced ma (like the ma of mamma).

It's just like "Mango" but with an "a" at the end. It's okay to (kind of) mispronounce it if you're in the US.
(ever hear that guy on an anime DVD yell out "Man-gah!" ?)

The original pronounciation is closer to "Mawn-ga".
The spelling in katakana characters goes "ma-n-ga"
Japanese has only five vowel sounds--fewer than English, and it's easy to look up how each syllable is spoken aloud.

People, regardless of their native tongue, when pronouncing foreign words, tend to pronounce them their native way. For example, the word Toyota is Toh-yoh-tah, not Toy-yo-duh as said by English-speakers. Another one is salsa; it's sahn-sah, not sul-suh. Ever heard Spanish or French speakers pronounce English words?

manga is not pronounced like the word "man" as in standard american english. It's between that and the vowel in pond.
Like "La" in "do re mi fa so la ti do". That's it.
