The car wiring harness has an extra wire.I've fitted the new head unit but as I said, the power goes off when you open the drivers door or turn on the ignition. The lights on the new unit flash on and off every 20 or so seconds when the ignition is on.Could it have something to do with light dimming.

whenever your harness has extra wires cut them and tape the ends. chances are something is getting grounded behind the radio and causing it to flicker. if that doesnt work, pull it all out and double check your connections.

It sounds like you've used the wrong wire to earth the unit.
If it's a fairly recent car (1998 on) you might also have tapped into a CAN BUS wire. The CAN BUS on a car is the same principle of an offices' computer network, but it's where various ECU's on the car communicate with each other. If you checked that wire with a test lamp when you fitted the stereo it would give you the impression of a 12V feed when it's actually a very fast switching signal.

You've probably wired something incorrectly. Unplug the deck and check each wire while turning the ignition on/off, turning on the park lights, adjusting the dimmer, etc to see what is wrong.

There should be no extra wires. Every wire on the harness has a purpose, what was the extra one for?
If it wasn't needed, then there may be a short somewhere. Make sure there are no loose-ended wires.

You've got some serious electrical problems. Take it to a mechanic or junk it.
