The only thing you need for an OFFICIAL engagment is two people who agree that they are engaged:) I know a lot of people said a ring is required but that is not true - I was engaged and married 5 years before I got a engagement ring (just had a wedding band until then) and my engagment was not any less valid then if there was a ring - obviously, lol.
SO- if you asked, and she said yes and meant it - you are officially engaged.

A proposal and an acceptance. And don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
When my husband and I got engaged, I did not wear a ring at first. I cannot tell you how hurtful it was that my family refused to acknowledge my engagement simply because I was not wearing a ring. It was a materialistic, overly traditional, and hurtful reaction, when it should have been a celebration.
I chose not to wear a ring because my husband and I simply did not see the point in spending thousands of dollars on a piece of jewelry in order to "prove" our commitment--and we still don't. I now wear a very simple sterling silver engagement ring along with my very simple white gold wedding band.
My point is: An engagement is not a ring-giving ceremony. It's a formal commitment to another person. It's an agreement to start planning the rest of your lives together. It's an open acknowledgment--to each other and to the rest of the world-- that you've found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. That's an engagement. If a ring comes with it, great. But if it doesn't, who's to judge that it's not a "real" engagement"?

when you give a ring or symbol gift of the engagement or announce it to family friends thru a get together party. When you ask the person to be married and give a ring any of those or announcment public in paper.Just because you dated for 5 yrs etc doesnt make you on auto- engaged it has to be mutally pronounced thru something like a ring or announced.

When two people agree to marry each other, they are engaged. Neither a set date nor a ring is necessary.

I'd say its official when the guy (or girl) gets down on his or her knee and pops the question, with a ring of course. I suppose its not essential to get down on one knee, but its nice. But I suppose once you let the first person know about it, than its official there too, bc the old grapevine will surely kick in.

You don't need a ring to have an engagement...it is the intent and the question, not material things.

the ring and the proposal itself. when the man offers their life to you and does it in a way where you fully accept and do the same... that's what I call an engagement!

When a man or woman propose to their partner and the partner says yes and they are given a engagement ring. Or, when you say I love you and I'll marry you...
