My mom watches a little boy who I've also gotten really fond of, who is 1 1/2 years old. He's gotten into this biting phase. How do we teach him not to do that and that it hurts? What's the best approach? Just telling him not to isn't really working nor is time-out (for like 2 minutes).

DO NOT BITE BACK! That teaches the child that it's ok to bite. When they bite, deal with the problem immediately. The best think you can do it give a firm "NO!" or "STOP!". And then take away the toy, etc that cause them to bite. Removing them from the situation has also been said to help such as time outs. Hopefully it helps. I would bring it up to the parents as well. They may be dealing with it at home a different way.

A good response to this is go to the injured person immediately and give consolation while the 'biter' looks on to see your reaction! It's best to give the injured party the attention and not the prepetrator any except to tell them look how so and so is hurting, crying...dont you feel bad? That type of attention gears the child to learning compassion for another human.
Then when the injured party feels better, ask the 'biter' to apologize and ask them if they are ok and that they wont bite anymore. Good dialog and no freaking out. At such a young age though you might have to go thru this a couple of times. Peace.

talk to his mom about what she does to disapline him for it and do that. I don't want to suggest biting the kid because you'll be reinforcing the behavior, but at the same time it has worked for many people's kids. Try standing him in the corner with his arms at his sides for a few minutes....3 at lest, and don't let him move until his time is up. Most likely you'll have to stand right next to him but kids hate so it works for the most part of it. Good luck.

Children will grow out of this phase. Sometimes, it's not that they are naughty and want to bite people. He may be teething (at this age, it's probably his molars) so he feels the urge to bite to relieve the teething pains. Perhaps give him a teether or a pacifier or a teething biscuit to bite on.

Every good bite deserves another. Experiential learning is something that is not often advocated, but since it is controlled, could be quite effective. Some children learn only when they understand the consequences. If you share with him how no one likes it and that people will bite him back, he will more likely than not stop himself.

I wish you well.

No, you can't bite him back!
You tell the parents so they can teach him and you keep a good eye on him and whenever he looks like he's about to chomp, you physically keep him from doing that.

Bite him back. Check with his parents first, but it works. When he bites, all he sees is the reaction he gets and the attention he receives. My Dad bit me as a kid after I bit my sister. He told me after that I didn't do it anymore. Once he realizes it causes pain and he might just get bit back, he should stop.

Tell the boys parents to work on it at home. If he keeps it up the schools will kick him out if he still does it there.
