I am a young athletic male who doesn't know how to ice skate.

What kind of skates should I get? Where can I get cheap ones? Any tips or suggestions about anything related to learning how to skate is appreciated.

until you're confident that you'll continue liking the sport and thus NEED the skates, save your money. get rental skates. they should have some decent ones. well. i took a long time to let go of my friends and the board. one advice: go with your friends who skate and are generally nice enough not to tease.

unless you're really interested to take skating to the next level, also hold off classes. skating can be expensive.

wear gloves no matter what. they protect you from the cold and brutal impact when you fall. some ice can be sharp due to being cut by strong skaters. my friend has these horrible scars from skating, one dangerously near her wrist.

wear long clothing to cover yourself and to keep you warm. it helps when you fall too. lesser injuries, the better you can make use of your skating time.

also, keep yourself prepared for sudden falls as there may be holes in the ice due to ppl falling down, jumps by figure skaters, etc.

but then, dont let people scare you. falls are not that bad. it's better than on land, for sure. the slippery ice will make you skid after you fall. this will reduce the impact. dont get up immediately if you're shocked.

start out by walking on land with skates. your skates, if figure skating style, should be tighter at the ankle. generally if you can slip a finger under the lace, that's tight enough. it should feel really snug, more so than your sports shoes.

relax on the ice. observe how the better skaters move. follow as such. it's easier to know when you see them. dont go to any frozen pond alone. it's dangerous.

hmm. regarding what skates you should get, i'll say soft skates. if you're in the US, riedell should be the popular brand. i have risport skates, which work for me. i'm not sure about riedell, but if it's so wrong it cant be so popular.

that's riedell's website, with that as a soft skate.

new figure skating boots will hurt like hell, so you must have the endurance! they're not very cheap too. so i'd get a second hand ones. mine was a month old when i got it and looked and feel new.

your buds may say stuff if they're not quite considerate but ignore them if you really feel like you have to learn the sport. that's what i do.

good luck on your skating, and remember, if you fall, it's okay. everyone else does.

Its all about balance and co-ordination. If you can roller blade you should be off to a good start. If you fall forward's, remember to try and curl your fingers into a fist. That way anyone skating by you wont cut your fingers off - just a tip!
