Put your hand on his forehead.
Pour the water gently behind your hand.
Your hand is soothing to him, and means that the water does not get into his eyes, since your one hand is on his forehead stopping any soap or anything from getting into his eyes.
At first to get my daughter to keep her head back at hair washing time, I had shorts on and I sat on the edge of the tub with my feet in the water.
Then I put one hand on her forehead...to stop the soap and water from getting into her eyes...and poured the water gently from a plastic cup using my free hand.
As she got the idea, she knew to close her eyes...when it's rinse time, and put her head back, and I didn't have to put my hand on her forehead, because she did that herself....and it's a matter of trust.
Later she starting filling up the cup, and rinsing her own hair.
After a year of this, I got the shower head with the extender arm, so I could rinse her hair.....gently and control where the water would go.
.............now she's 17.

try have him lay back in the tub and tilt head back.
or try a dry washcloth over eyes or both.
Depending on age of son take bath with and lay him in legs and support him and rinse hair . I did this til my daughter was about 3 yrs old.
Good luck

When I give our 3 month old son a bath, I just shield his eyes (like a visor) with my hand when I rinse his hair to prevent the water from going into his eyes.

You can buy a shield that sits around the head with an elastic strip, giving you plenty of room to wash and rinse hair without it getting in their eyes.
They widely available, and are not that expensive

it looks lite a baseball cap but with out the top.
first id soap him up and then put on his visor , fill up th cup and tilt his head back and say one two three and just splash his head 3 or four times.
but they cry for a while until they get over it.

I don't think there's anything you can buy. You'll just have cover his eyes with your hand and tilt his head back a little. Maybe make it fun for him too. Get a toy watering can and rinse his head that way or something :-)

I wash my baby's head before I give her the actual bath. I lay her on the counter and support her head and neck with one hand over the sink, and use a washcloth. It's really quick and painless that way.

I've never had this problem but there is a great site with many useful products. They have something called a shampoo visor. Check it out:

How old is he?
Just ask him to close his eyes really tightly. Make it seem like real fun. Like making a face or something. It should work. You could try goggles too.
