Dave is wrong, environmental issues have EVERYTHING to do with the economy... People don't seem to understand that without the environment and the ecosystem services we utilize, there would be no such thing as the economy. This is an easy concept- we catch fish, we sell them. We do not manufacture fish. They are a service from the ecosystems called oceans/lakes/rivers. When it comes to more complex issues such as the technology industry for example, it is vital that companies develop ways to make thier products while conserving resources and protecting the planet. We can make millions more jobs if the government starts subsidizing growing industries like solar and wind power instead of offering perverse and unfair subsidies to oil companies. There's a lot going wrong out there, but one good way to boost the economy is to GO GREEN!

It is nothing to do with the economy.

The issues are that everything environmental is sold as pro whilst the truth is there are far too many cons.

CFCs were banned - but one of the replacement gases in AC and fridges is actually ten times more polluting!

Sugar cane has doubled in price in 18 months, corn and bread prices are rising fast as these are used for bio fuel. Worse it is encouraging afforestation!!

All strategies need to be examined for both pros and cons honestly and this is not happening to the detriment of the world and it's people.

As far as the economy goes. China and many other countries are investing in new, more efficient, cheaper and environmentally sound technology. Within a few short years they may become economic giants producing cheaper, cleaner, more efficient products. The US is sticking to protectionism and it's old technology - where do you think that will lead?

Where I live (and probably anywhere else), whenever there might be an environmental problem related to development, the developers must go through and environmental review process and apply for permits to make sure they are not harming the environment with what they do.

Economy and jobs imply production or processing of goods. Goods are manufactured to meet public demand, so it is the public that is in control of
protecting the environment.
Unfortunately most humans are selfish, self serving, unfeeling, inconsiderate, greedy, lazy, mercenary bastards that ignore ethics ,morality, and human kindness. With those traits and statistics it is easy to see the poacher mentality of most humans toward the environment; they are more interested in their material gain and greed, than in the preservation or conservation of nature's gifts.
The only debate would be between need and greed, but there is no need, for the most part, to destroy our planet for the fanciful enjoyment that a few spoiled and over indulgent individuals dictate.

As my governor is fond of saying, "Jobs vs. the environment is a false choice." Overwhelming evidence demonstrates that clean air and water result in a more productive workforce, and a healthier economy.

Shelly has the right idea. Smart people know how to make money while improving the world. Bad people only know how to make money, and the world be damned.
