Sorry about the rude answers. I think the general advice from some of the posters is correct: you should contact the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country of origin and/or inspect their website. Additionally, if you do actually win the lottery, you will surely get detailed instructions on the length of its validity and when you'd have to relocate.

That said, I have a Ukrainian friend who won the lottery. Although he was already here on a student visa when he did, I seem to recall him talking about similarly placed Ukrainians and he said that the process was slow going and not a "Pack your bags, you're on the next plane out" sort of thing. Just be aware that the U.S. imposes length of residency requirements once you're here. That means that you won't be able to travel back home for long periods of time - 5 years? - and that is almost unanimously thought to be extremely hard, especially when people have family in the old country.

In any case, good luck. And don't be discouraged by the nativist feeling that shows through a bit on the board.

Are you absolutely sure you have a Green Card? Or are you just on the list? They select more than 50,000 names but only give out 50,000 visas. They select more than they need because some people turn them down.

If you have a visa to enter the USA, settle your affairs in your home country, pack your bags and come on in! That's what the visa is for. Once you are here, you will have to adjust your status and get a work permit, as well as a social security number. If you can afford it, an immigration attorney is a good idea, especially for the work permit. You will want to be able to work as soon as possible.

Edit: If you win, you will need to go to your nearest US Embassy. They will write to you and tell you what to bring.

Good luck.

I think you should ask the immigration service. Since it is a permanent residency I would assume you could get it and wait a year. Generally permanent residents can leave for up to a year and keep their permenant residency. If you actually win, and they contact you, you can ask.

Good luck!
