I had a phone call telling me I had won such and such a prize. It then asked me to press 9, has anyone else heard of this scam. What is it and how does it work?

This is an old toll fraud scam. It is designed for an office. The scammer calls a business where you typically dial 9 to get an outside line. If the answerer follows the procedure usually requested which is to hit the transfer key, press 9, and then usually 0. This would then connect the scammer to the operator where they can make a long distance call on the company's phone bill.

No, never heard of that particular one. Pressing just the 9 key won't do anything but maybe transfer you to a representative.

You press nine and gold coins tumble out of your receiver.
