NY City is one of the safest of the 25 largest cities in the US. For the past 10 years it's been #1 to #3 safest out of those largest 25. Most of the city is very safe. When I was growing up, before Giuliani "cleaned up" the city, it was scary to walk around, and you walked around always looking at everything and everyone around you - crime was rampant. Now, I'm too relaxed when I walk down the street, it's so safe.
So other than people who live in a pretty crime-ridden ghetto (which there are a few but not many of in NYC) nobody here is afraid of anything. New Yorkers can sleep very well at night.

I practically do. I've gotten really paranoid since my apartment was broken into a few times. I get afraid that someone will try to break in while I'm sleeping since sometimes I nap during the day when 'normal' people are at work. I have a bat and mace by my bed. I'd probably feel the same way if I lived in the suburbs if I had a few break-ins.

No. Don't live there at present, but it is actually a fairly safe city. Don't believe the hype.
