I got a 8 week old female kitten & currently have a 3 yr. old male cat. I have heard stories about male cats attacking female kittens. My cat will run up to my kitten when she is playing & will watch her & follow her. Today he started licking her. His he trying to to attack her?

Ur male cat is territorial and is letting the kitten know that she is being accepted. If it had been a male kitten, not so easy. If he wanted to attack her, his fur would stand out and he would hiss at her. But he is just curious with his new play mate and wants to see how he can play with her.

No, he isn't trying to attack her. Some male cats will kill small kittens to get rid of other male's kittens (not as common with domestic cats though). Make sure you have him neutered and when she is about 5 months old get her spayed unless your going to breed pure bred kittens for a living or to help another breeder. Otherwise your female's health will be at risk (by not being fixed) your female may hate your male (for rapeing her while she is in heat) and you will find out not as many people wanted kittens as you thought.

P.S. If everyone gets a Thumbs Down at the Same Time it can be a sign some jerk is just going around Thumbs Downing every Answer they can find for points or to be a Jerk. Although some times a person will thumbs down every answer that isn't their own (and some times those people let pointless answers go).

It doesn't sound like it at all. Most probably he's just being friendly and letting her (and others) know that it's okay for her to be here.

HOWEVER, there can be problems later if he's not fixed. While I'm not saying that your cat is doing that, he could be sort of tasting her, checking if she's fertile. Now, at eight weeks, that's rather premature, but it has happened that young female cats (still kittens) have been raped by older male cats before they're ready to start thinking of kittens of their own. So my advice is that if you haven't, you should fix him.

You have a good combination there - they are relatively close in age and the older cat is male (less territorial than if a female).

Sounds a little like he has fallen in love! The licking is a friendly and nurturing thing for him to do. He might hiss a little at her if she gets too rambunctious for him at times - maybe even a little swat if he wants her to back off. Those things are normal and part of the usual cat routine in establishing relationships.

If your cat is licking the kitten, he is grooming it. It is a good sign that he accepts and likes the kitten. Count your blessings.

As for Sailors post about thumbs downing...I feel your pain, really, someone has been tracking me, and giving a thumbs down to every question I answer, even though the information is correct, and I often get chosen as best answer. Just ignore them, they are small people, who hope to get enough thumbs down on your answer to hide it. Most folks don't bother to open the hidden answers. Makes it easier for the phonies to get best answer. Oh well, this is the internet, and every poster on this board does not have the cats' best interest at heart. Some are looking for personal recognition. Sooo Sad!

No. Cat "attacks" include hissing, growling, swatting and scratching. Your male seems to be showing acceptance of the youngster.

We have a similar pair in our shelter at the moment. One of our adult male cats grooms and snuggles with one of the female kittens. The two often sleep together with their legs wrapped around one another. ((In our shelter, the animals aren't in cages or kennels; they're in common rooms where they can interact with one another.))

No he's probably letting her know he's the boss! If they were 2 male cats, yes you would have probably seen big fights! My friend's 2 male cats fought to the point of bleeding each other, and she had to give one away. I have 2 cats myself, and the male watches the female cat (younger by months) play. They lick each other's hair like they're helping each other get clean or dry faster. very cute! They will be fine! =^_^=

You need to read some books about cat behavior. There are many good ones even at the library. Where have you heard such stories and have you ever seen a cat attack another cat by licking? And what kind of attack are you talking about? Please do some reading so you don't accidentally harm them.

He is not trying to attck her, but the stories you heard were probably true because generally older male cats are not very accepting. However your cats sound like they are geting along. But if they are not fixed you could end up with kittens.

Most likely not. Probably investigating her and establishing the pecking order and also wanting to play with her. Don't worry unless he gets real aggressive, but the chances of that are pretty slim.
