Why is it that people think it's okay to say to thin people, "Oh my goodness! You are sooooo skinny!", but it's not okay for people to say to heavy people, "Oh my goodness! You are sooooo fat!"

Why is it that people think it's okay to say to thin people, "We need to fatten you up! , but it's not okay for people to say to heavy people, "We need to work on slimming you down!"

Why is it that people think it's okay to say to thin people, "You better put some more food on that plate! , but it's not okay for people to say to heavy people, "You better take some food off of that plate!"

I am thin. I realize that. But, can we stop with all the "you're too thin" comments? Does anyone else think this is rude, or is it just me?

Because you being thin makes them feel fat. When people say this they are projecting their insecurities (unless its a parent, grandparent etc.) trying to make you feel bad by insinuating that you have an eating disorder or what not. Just remember that obesity plagues us in the north, it kills people, comes second after smoking. If you are healthy and naturally thin be happy you aren't like so many people in jeopardy of dying because they can't stop eating, which is pretty sad. IF you are healthy, be glad you don't have to worry about being unhealthy at this point in your life, because things could change depending on your age and lifestyle. If you are healthy, then let those comments go, because no matter what they say, you are one of the lucky ones.

On the first part of the question:if i call a someone skinny i would definitely be criticizing him.I wouldn't say that to a girl. And it is not OK to say to fat people "Oh my goodness! You are sooooo fat!" because it is rude. But it is good if you just say that for their own good they should take off a few pounds.

On the second part of the question:Well as i said before being skinny is bad!You should have at least 8-9% of fat(for male and 20 % for female). And it is okay to tell fat people to go for a swim.

On the third part of the question:Same as part 1 and 2.

And i don't think it is rude to tell you you are thin(if you are a girl).Annoying yes,but not rude.

Because you are smaller and more child-like, they start to feel maternal towards you and want to mother you in some way. It's not often meant in a malicious way, just that they feel protective towards you - it's a natural thing. As for fat people and the fat comments, well that's just where society is at right now. There aren't many natural hormones surging in the body that make you want to challenge or change a fat person, these people are more like the order-givers, the biological caretakers. Natural instincts might be crude but it all seems OK to me.

Of course it is rude. People may just think that a thin person is not as self conscious as a fat person, so it's more "acceptable"

It's rude. People don't think that you'll have a problem with the comments because your thin. You must have everything. Their comments are better left unsaid.
