and will it be good for general picture taking?

Nope.

It's not great for general use, since with digital cameras, you get around a 1.5x focal length multiplier. So the short end of that range is 70mm, which would behave like a 105mm.

If you have the Rebel, get that lens in a Canon Mount (or better yet, something like a 28-200).

If you already have the lens, consider a Nikon D50 instead- and pick up Nikons 18-55 or 18-70 for general use and keep the Tamron zoom for wildlife and sports photography.

Nope, not without a adapter that will only make it a manual lens. It is a good Lens though. I would sell it and get the canon mount tamron.

No. If it has the Nikon mount it will not fit on the Canon. However adapters are available (ebay?). Adapters are not he ideal solution however. If you are thinking about buying this lens, it would be available with the Canon mount.
