Some guy said that martial arts are only "arts" and arent effective in a life or death situation. That completely depends on the STUDENT himself. However, it IS true(from what I understand), that many students will spend years and years learning a martial art, yet these students will still be unable to defend themselves in a real fight. This PROBLEM can be rooted in bad teaching, lack of understanding. It can be rooted in many different things, but it is only PARTIALLY true. Like I said, it will depend on the student.
There are alot of phony @$$ teachers, which can only produce many bad students. I highly recommend staying away from Shaolin Kung Fu(In America) since the art has been degenerated into mostly a DEMONSTRATIVE ART FORM. On the contrary, REAL Shaolin Kung Fu that you may take in the Shaolin Monastery would be quite effective in a life on death situation.
Even though martial art IS an art form, it is not necessary similar to painting or acting(which can be considered art forms). A REAL martial art, obviously, is based on the idea of the trainee developing skills necessary to defend himself in a life or death situation. The skills gained through martial art can differentiate from the skills that an individual may gain in a college painting class.
One of the key points of a REAL martial art, would be the development of intangible attributes, like incredible concentration in a deadly situation. It is true that the concentration of the average citizen will be quite disturbed in a life or death confrontation, to say the least. Alot of inexperienced inviduals may completely panic, then die. A great martial art teacher will teach you how to develop concentration, and stay composed in a deadly situation.
Anyway, now that I've explained how a good martial art is extremely effective in a life or death street situation, let me give my 2 cents on which martial art would be more effective on the streets. The best defense on the street is to have......
NO ART

Well if its in self defence, you really shouldnt get anything. If you use like exsessive force though, like if you pick up a bat or a peice of something and start beating them until they are seriously hurt, you might get a little time, but not much. It would go to trial and you would most likeley get off actually.

Tae Kwon Do is often called the self defence art. I love it! But really, i don't think there is such thing as a best martial art. There are only awesome martial artists.

the best martial art for self defence varies from person to person. A martial art mentally prepares you for street self defence which means that when someone attacks you, you dont hesitate to respond. martial arts focus on mind, body and spirit so a martial art trains your mind, builds up your body and makes your spirit stronger to make you less prone to fear for when/if someone attacks you

There is no question about this one my friend. I have not bothered to look at the other answers. But I can guess what they will say.
Go find a school teaching jiu jitsu, Preferably a Gracie approved school, but that is not necessary. In a good school you will roll hard and also learn kicks and strikes. The best defense is knowing you have the best offense.
Train as if your life depends on it.
It Does.
Or you can listen to Chewy. Suit yourself. I walk the streets with no fear. And I have since well before the youngsters made a popular phrase of it.

lets look at the reality of the street.
The reality is that if someone is looking to really harm you, they will be armed. Your best defence is bieng armed yourself with a bit of unarmed training as a backup.
Ask yourself, would you rather be fighting three guys with pipes, knives whatever with your fists or a handgun?
would you rather be fighting them unarmed or with a knife (still they have a huge advantage but better off than if you were unarmed).
you need to be wary of many so called RBSD (reality based self-defence) classes because they don't teach properly and are just using the label and the term "street" to make money and be different by making you think all other arts are tournament arts.
Don't lie to yourself, MMA and other martial arts that train realistically work the same on the street as it does in the ring, the laws of physics don't change but there is no chance of someone whipping out a knife in the UFC or pride.
you would want to consider a CCW permit as top or if you can't carry take some knife fighting courses or learn to use a small stick that is concealable. then focus on an unarmed training.

There is NO "best" Martial Art, the only thing you can do is find a discipline that you feel that will work to give you a solid base to work from.
and then train to be the best Martial Artist that YOU can be, because you'll fight in the manner you train.
If you train sloppy, you'll fight sloppy.
the best thing to do is to train in a "standing game" Martial Arts discipline, and then a "ground game" Martial Arts discipline to become more well rounded in your fighting ability.
you have to be ready for anything to happen on the street, that is why you must continually train; to be ready for whatever may come your way.

You should take some mixed martial arts training, learn proper strikes and defense, and some grappling and ground skills.
