It is terrible the damage that is done to patients when they are hospitalized. This is especially true for elderly or severly sick patients. Often times nurses or techs.actually learn on the patients. Elderly people have very tissue thin skin and the nurses are in such a hurry that they often traumatize the patients. First rule of medicine is to do no harm. Any thoughts how to protect yourself and others?

The first rule of medicine may be" to do no harm" but today that rule is often broken or just simply ignored. Many doctors and hospitals care only about money and forget about the term NO HARM. Today's society has changed for the worse-it is a sign of the times. Some doctors complain that they don't get the respect that they used to but neither do the patients They yell at their patients and complain if they have to see them. They complain about insurance problems even to the patients not the insurance company. Medicare and medicaid should have their own group of doctors and a hospital that only takes care of these patients so those who are more then willing to take Medicares money but treat the patients shabby should not even have to be bothered. Their income should come only from those high classed people who can afford them. It is a sad situation.Get in touch with your senator and try to make a change because things will only get worse. well not in a hospitalization story however i donated blood for a coworker once who was struck in the head with a small aircraft propeller. I hate needles btw. The nurse missed my vein as she stuck it in my arm looked at me, turned it sideways and stuck it further all the while i was biting hard and telling her it hurt like a @&%$*. After all was said and done i pulled the needle out after almost completing the pint donation and walked out in severe pain. It caued a large bruise about the size of my hand covering my entire elbow that lasted for a month. i feel it still and often i guess when the atmospheric pressure changes and sometimes just cus its upset. Its been 10 years. I took a blood test recently and it formed a bruise again after no contact with needles and when i was younger no history of hating needles. Coincedentally the bruise formed a six on my arm..........mabee a nine depending which way u look at it.

Oh, please. Just don't go to the hospital if you think needle sticks are so horrible. That needle stick is a necessary procedure to find out what is wrong with you and how to fix it. Yes, if you are very sick or very frail it will cause some tissue damage.

If you are injured and bleeding out, then, yes - i will stick a big needle in your arm and yes, it will hurt. The fluids could very well save your life. Medical professionals are concerned with keeping you as healthy and active as possible - and if that means a needle stick, then yes, that's what it will take.

You always have the option of refusing - any procedure, any time.

Unfortunately.....people are usually dehydrated when they end up in the hospital which makes a 1-stick almost impossible. It happens, but I wouldn't say that "terrible damage" is done to most patients. The sicker you are, the harder it is to get a good vein. And if you're elderly, your veins are very fragile. It's not the nurses/hematology's fault.
