That's exactly what they are telling you: to shut up, even though I would not spell the pronounciation that way it's pretty close. They are saying: "Callate la boca" but you can also say it:
Silencio, Callate or Cierra la boca.
P.S.: "mensa" means dumb by the way

but, according with your spell, i think that i'm not wrong when i think that your friend says
cállate la boca.....this is a common way to ask someone to shut up, in some southamerican countries is pronounced like
Cáyatelaboca.....like that, all together and very fast

or

I think they are saying "Cállate" which means shut up.
Be quiet is more like stop talking or "deja de hablar".
