My husband, who is 50 years old, has noticed that the palms of his hands are red and splotchy and that two of the fingertips on his left hand have a numb/tingly sensation.

My husband has herniated discs in the lumbar region of the spine and tingling problems with his left leg, but has never had any problems with the upper back or neck.

There is definitely a circulation issue going on here...which leads to tingling in the extremities and the "splotching" is a lack of oxygen to the area.

YOu have two choices that will work and both are alternatives:

1) An acupunturist to restore circulation to the entire body, through raising the chi ( energy ) in the body

OR

2) A chiropractor that ONLY adjusts the atlas...you do not want a chiropractor who will attempt to adjust the lumbar region...he can get relief with a chiropractor that only does "atlas" or neck area adjustments. There are a lot of techniques in the chiropractic field and sometimes you need to search for the right one. If you can find a chiropractor that has an actual "atlas" machine that would be awesome and really help your husband.

I dont know but i would take him the doctor. It could be something serios especially if he has problems with his spine. The spine is very sensitive and holds all the nerves to your body. If something is wrong with his spine, it could affect the rest of his body, including movement. If nerves are disrupted, it could cause numbing and most likely tingling. Take him to the doctor, only they can really find out what it is. Good luck!

Poor circulation.

My mother in law smokes like a chimney, and her hands are both like that. Her doctor said it's because of the smokes and poor circulation.

There are a variety of possible causes for these symptoms, some of which are potentially serious, and it is senseless to try to guess in a forum such as this one. Your husband should visit a doctor as soon a practical.

This could be a problem with a compressed nerve, or a problem with circulation. Get it checked out by your family doctor.
