Territorial instincts, fear, pain, aggression, boredom, a need for attention, because they are a breed that has been bred specifically for guarding etc and so has strong barking instincts. There's a lot of reasons, and treatment depends on what the cause is. For example; if a dog is barking because it is lonely and ignored then paying it lots of attention could solve the problem. However, if the dog barks because it has learnt that barking makes you pay attention to it, every time you interact with your dog when he barks you are just reinforcing the behaviour.
Firsly, I'd try to work out what the problem is. Do akitas bark a lot in general? If so, training classes should help but could take a lot of work. The dog could be barking because it is in pain - are you sure that they haven't been injured recently, and this could have brought on the barking? If your dog is often alone then boredom or too much energy is a likely cause. Taking the dog on lots of long walks to wear them out, and making sure that they have lots of interactive toys might cut down on this. Toys like those balls that you can put food inside and the dog has to work out how to get the treats are excellent. If the dog is territorial then teaching them that what he regards as intruders are actually very good things - every time a visitor comes, give them treats to pass to your dog when he's quiet and such. Try to block any stimuli that normally cause them to bark, if you can. There's a lot more information than I can type out here online - do a google search for excessive barking and see what you can come up with.

Nervousness...Reassure the dog. Tell the dog what these noises are. Sounds crazy but it works. Take the dog for a walk and show the dog what each thing is. What a dog doesn't see, doesn't know and barks. Some things come naturally and will never stop...like if a stranger knocks on the door. But lots of love, patience and reassurance will calm the dog.

Probably territorial instincts and boredom. One of our dogs bark at everything too. I haven't figured out how to stop it, playing with her more and exercising her more would help I'm sure, but how to find the time?

boredom. Try putting pebbles or marbles in a can and whenever he barks shake it or roll it towards him. He'll get the idea.
