An average eight year old can more than adequately tend a younger child with adult support quickly available. To be left without an adult's support, whether tending other children or not, is best held off until 12 years old, in my opinion and based on extensive experience working with children. To be left alone occasionally when younger than that is risky, but certainly not ruled out arbitrarily because being left alone is about being able to think through problems that can and do arise. Some children can problem-solve earlier than others can. It's not enough to know, though, how to use a phone and call 911. It's about having the sense and maturity to know what to do when the boogeyman crawls in the bedroom window, about what to do if trapped by fire, about what to do if the heat goes out, about what to really really do if a child begins to choke on a Lego block. There's not time to call 911 in about two billion problems that arise that mothers and fathers have to handle every day. There is much to be said against putting a child through that burden of crisis. But, when old enough, around 12, young people need to face that burden in little ways.

I think time of day, the neighborhood, the child's knowledge of the neighbors, and how long he'll be alone plays a big part. The laws are generally around 12.
Babysitting begins around age 13 (grade 7). You'd be wise to take a babysitting class -check the local extension office (4-H office). They usually offer first aid and babysitting on a Saturday for 3-4 hours.

The laws are different in each state, but of course parents should feel comfortable that their child is mature enough to stay at home alone and know what to do in an emergency

i think never till they move out and get their own place. It's hard to trust kids now a days I think kids are fully capable of staying home alone at like 12 but do i trust them to. No they will do something stupid like throw a party. If your lucky enough to have a decent kid then maybe but otherwise i would never leave them home alone. To babysit you should be at least 16.

Children have different maturity levels. State laws give you different age ranges, but the average is age 14.
Taking care of a child, again, has to do with the level of maturity and responsibility.

I asked a policeman here in Ohio and he said there is no set law, it's up to the parents judgement if the child can be trusted or not. Personally I believe no younger than 10.

I think it really depends on the maturity of the child. There is no set rule but certainly no younger then 8 or 9.
