I have a 1 1/2 year old beagle and she has never barked. She also doesn't seem interested when "exciting" things happen like when the door bell rings or if she's outside and a car goes by. Even when I'm walking her, she doesn't seem to care when other dogs or people walk by. Is this a problem or am I just lucky?

I don't think she's deaf because she does hear when someone calls her, even from very far away. I have had her since she was a puppy and know for a fact she has not been "debarked". I am fine with it, she's a loveable dog and my vet says sometimes they just don't bark BUT I need a second opinion.

Also, I know she is a pure bread beagle. I knew the family who bred her and I've seen both her parents, both beagles.

I did forget one thing that tells me she's not deaf either. I have tried ""Roooing" with her and she does sometimes let out a noise but it sounds like it's hurting her to do so.

This is not entirely uncommon among beagles. beagles are pack animals and will howl and yip when they are on a fresh sent. But if your beagle is solo in your family it is not uncommon for them to be quieter in nature especially if their male. Don't fear though when she catches a fresh rabbit or raccoon sent she'll go crazy. beagles are guided by their noses.

She is still young yet and may not find her nose and howler until 2 or 3 years when living alone.

I have a beagle and she howls/barks mildly, but nothing like everyone else thought she would since she's a beagle. My best friend has had beagles her whole life and only one of those 5 have been very vocal.
When a dog gets excited and barks at the doorbell- it's because it was un-consciously taught to him/her- meaning the owners probably run to the door when the doorbell rings and the dog thinks it's their job to do the same.
Dogs, just like people, have different interests and some dogs just like to be with their humans and that's all they like/need. At the beagle meet ups I go to every month there is one beagle that is friendly with the others, but keeps to herself and doesn't bark/howl at all- she's not deaf or "weird," it's just her. I'd consider yourself lucky to have a couch potato non-vocal doggie!! :)

It is not typical of a beagle. I have a female that is 4 years old and she barks all of the time. She is highly interested in meeting other people or animials...especially kids. She goes wild when the doorbell rings and is hyper for 5 minutes or so after somebody arrives.

Have you talked to your vet about the behavior? Even if she has some sort of dissability, if she's happy and you can live with her as she is, what is the problem? It would probably be helpful for you to understand the situation though.

My Beagle barks if the wind blows a leaf outside. This could be a blessing in disguise for you!

On the plus side, Beagles make wonderful family pets. My kids absolutely love our dog and she loves them. You made a good choice in breeds.

Good luck.

Consider yourself lucky on the doorbell issue. My guess is she's not much of a guard dog. You are probably a strong leader, so she doesn't feel the need to alert you of potential danger, guard the house or boss you around!

Have you tried "Rooo"ing with her? It's a typical hound thing, but solitary hounds sometimes need to be shown how to do it.

It means, "let's play!" or "call the hounds!"

"Arrr Rooo oooo ooooooooooooooooooo!"

Ah...you've tried Rooing...my dog at first made a low pitched gutteral noise, it took her awhile to match my high pitched "roo" almost like she didn't know how.

Have you had her since she was a puppy? Because beagles are known to be howlers and barkers. Some cruel people will have a dog debarked, which is like having their vocal cords clipped. Maybe she is just a very mellow dog.

Could we get our dogs together? Maybe your Beagle could have a talk with my two mutts and explain the benefits of NOT barking.

I think you're lucky, haha! Our beagle barks constantly and he's loud like to wake the dead. :P
You would know if yours had been debarked. We had a rescued ridgeback once who had been debarked before she came to us. She barked anyway; it sounded like a cough.

I'm lucky too, my dog rarely barks - I almost wish he would sometimes like when the doorbell rings...
