Very likely that it is true...Or higher...herpes is also cold sores...Same virus, just two different strands. For some reason we call them cold sores when they are on your lip/mouth area, but people refer to the exact same thing as herpes when it is in other areas of the body. Cold sores (and herpes) are very common....probably more than 50% if you ask me.

50% of young adults in the US have herpes simplex 2 and that figure is expected to rise to 95% in 10 years. This is because the virus is continually shed whether or not you have ever had an outbreak and obviously between outbreaks. Indeed most people with herpes and spreading herpes have no idea that they even have it. The only protection is the continual use of condoms. Bear in mind that when herpes is present other sexually transmitted disease tend to be present as well and many if not most of these are worse than herpes and AIDS is most often fatal. Take care and with sex beware.

I don't know where you heard that one, but it might come from the fact that even a "cold sore" is a type of herpes - although relatively harmless.

There are many kinds of herpes, some a lot more damaging than others. Once you have the virus, you can never get rid of it. But I think 50% is WAY too high. Most people I know don't have it.

I always thought is was like 66%. There are different types of herpes-chicken pox is herpes, cold sores are herpes. Some people have the virus in 'em, but never show signs.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

According to the CDC about 45 million people have genital herpes. You don't state in your question if you're including others.

But 45 MM is roughly 15% of the population.
