Being able to announce the need to urinate before actually going is a developmental skill that requires practice and physical ability. Because she is wearing a diaper and has been peeing in it all her life, she probably has no idea what it is you are suddenly asking her to do. She has been peeing in her diaper without being aware of it all this time and you will likely not be successful in getting her to know when she is peeing or in need of peeing until you are ready to put her in regular panties. 2 1/2 can be a good age to introduce the concept of potty training for some children, but many children do not really get the hang of it until they are between 3-4 years old. Be patient and as consistent as you can in taking her to the toilet and she will get the idea. Each child is different and is ready to be potty trained at different ages.

We got my niece to use the potty by bringing her into the bathroom everytime we went. We kept the potty next to the big potty and a book (cause adults take something to read).
As soon as she wakes up she goes to the potty.
Also, we started giving potty presents and making a really big deal when she went. We made it seem like it was some great accomplishment. The gifts were little things.... like crayons, a book... dollar store stuff. Since you have a younger child too... you might want to include them... ya know, make it a little group effort. When the one starts to use the potty the other will want to go too.
It has tasken a little time but she's starting to tell us when she is peeing or has to go. Oh, another thing.... we started to give her pull ups and called them big girl princess pants (she's into princesses) instead of a diaper.
Keep your eyes on her... I noticed that my niece makes a certain face and stands a certain way when she is peeing.... we have been able to catch her before hand.
Good luck.... just make it a game without her knowing it.... make her feel like she is accomplishing something

Relax...don't put so much pressure on them. I know you think you're not putting pressure on them, but by just talking about it, it becomes a big deal. Let them know that when they feel like they need to go to the bathroom to tell you and reward them when they do (just a big hug or a song is enough of a reward...you don't have to give candy or anything). If they have accidents, that's OK and normal. Don't make a big deal out of it; just clean them up and tell them that next time they need to go, they can tell you and you'll help them. Be patient...have you ever meet a 20 year old that was not potty trained? :)

For some great books on the subject (and kids in general) I'd recommend anything by Dr. T. Barry Brazelton.

If they don't get it...they don't get it.

It's very frustrating...but until the downside of peeing in the diaper is greater than the upside...it's not going to happen.

Have you tried a reward structure? Make a chart, put it on the fridge and every time she pees in the toilet she gets a gold star and then after 5 gold stars she gets something she likes?

It worked with our oldest...good luck!!!

Your child at 2 1/2 understands u, and all children progress at all different ages. Rushing her to pee after 15 min. might be too soon for her, and she needs to be put on the toilet abit later. Praising her for a job well done encourages her to do good, patience is something we all have to work on, it will happen before u know it girl, hang in there... ur hands are full....have fun and good luck...:)

Why is she in diapers while you're potty training her? Get training underpants. She'll quickly realize that when she pees herself that icky wet feeling comes and soon she will be running to the toilet when she feels the urge to go. Good Luck!

Get rid of the diapers and pulls ups. Us the cotton training pants if you can. That way she can feel it. Diaper and pull ups are bad. Reward her each time she does go (I give my daughter 1 m&m for peeing and a hershey kiss for poopoo). Once she catches on to that she will be excited to go and will announce to anyone because she knows she will get a reward for going.

Unfortunately, it isn't something you can teach someone--especially a 2 1/2 yr. old. Eventually it'll just click and she'll get it but for now you'll just have to be patient.
