My husband likes beer and drinks a couple or three cans an evening. He rarely drinks to get drunk and just enjoys how beer tastes. I worry because a) beer costs much more than most other beverages and b) because other men I know don't drink that much in the week. He gets frustrated when I ask him please not to drink so much and I feel unreasonable.
I'd like to know how much other men drink in the week PLEASE!!

I think a beer or three after work is no big deal. If he's not drinking to get drunk I would not worry. You could solve this your self with a little test. Tell your husband about your concernes and ask him to please not drink for a week or two and see what his response is. If he refuses, worry, if agrees, no-worry.

I used to drink 9 litres of white lightening, 4 cans of Gold Label and 4 cans of Tennants Super every day. I drank this amount for several years. I drank because I was unhappy with life while sober and drinking made things easier to bear.
I don't think your husband has any real problem, actually drinking a few drinks every day consistantly will usually do little real harm - most people in Europe will have at least one drink a day but rarely more than four. If he drank nothing all week and 7 cans only on saturday this would be much worse.
How much does he spend on beer? 20 beers a week would be at most £250 a month if he was buying them in expensive bars, at home it will probably be significantly less than £100.
My father, who unlike me does not have a drinking problem has drunk around 3 cans a day for the past 40 years and has never had any health issues from beer.
Most of my friends (mid 20's - early 30's) drink 10-40 beers over an average week. Personally these days I don't drink.

Two or three beers a night is NOTHING! LIke you said, he doesn't even drink to get drunk. Studies have been done that say that a couple of beers a day can actually have positive effects on health. If you're worried about the cost, then he needs to drink the cheapest stuff out there. Some examples are Milwaukee's Best, Natural Light, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Genessee, Shaeffer, etc.

I only drink on weekends, at most twice a month. I would not worry to much about your husband, Your lucky he is not getting trashed every night of the week like some people I know. If anything you might want to make sure he has not become dependent, I do not know for sure if this can happen if you only drink a few beers a day, but with drawl does not sound like very much fun. I would google alcohol withdrawal and read the symptoms I am not an expert and have never gone through this but it can be pretty dangerous. You could also try getting him to buy lower alcohol beer. I actually found out last weekend that my favorite beer is only 3.5% and they also sell 3.2 beer in dry counties, it is usually cheeper than regular beer. They also make some good non-alcoholic brews but I doubt he would go for that. Good luck.

Rationally, I think there are a few questions that might help you to understand your husband's drinking.

1. Is your husband in good health?
2. Does he ever choose himself to go an evening without drinking?
3. Does he find his job or homelife stressful?

I know plenty of people who drink similar amounts daily as they feel it helps them cope with stress. However, I woudn't advocate it as healthy - 14 to 21 pints every week is quite a lot.

I drink 8-10 pints a week (it used to be much more), and I know i'm not healthy, or anywhere near it...

If it really is the taste of beer that he likes (and not the alcohol content), there are plenty of brands that do non-alcoholic alternatives. Maybe you could suggest that as an option?

I know my husband drinks too much. I've told him on many occasions that he does. He enjoys a drink. I do believe he has a problem, but there is not a great deal i can do. He is not abusive or aggressive, he is more relaxed when he has had a drink, and more affectionate. He is happy how he is. If we go out he drink about 3 pints of lager. When we get home he will have a couple of glasses of wine.

Oh heck, my husband drinks beer every night, and so do the other men in this town--we live in a very small town. Anyway, as long as it's not interfering in his life then it's not a problem. By interfering I mean, is he making it to work ok, is he getting things done, is he making his bill payments, is he handling money correctly, does he treat you appropriately, etc. If he is just casually drinking beer I wouldn't worry about it. If the beer is affecting his life and his behavior then it is a problem and you need to address it.

A few (2-3) beers does'nt seem unreasonable. If he starts to drink more and drinks to get drunk I would be concerned though. A beer of two may actually have a health benefit according to some reports.

The most natural and healthy diet for humans is an omnivorous diet, and not a plant based diet, or a meat-based diet per se. The Paleo Diet can be very widely varied and omnivorous for the most part, but the most important thing is that it’s unprocessed, and avoids the worst foods that agriculture brought mankind… refined inflammatory vegetable oils, refined grains (some are worse than others), and sugar! As you can see, the benefits of adopting a Paleo way of eating can be incredible! I’ve been eating 95% Paleo for the last 5-6 years and I’ve never felt better. I have dozens of friends that have adopted a more Paleo way of eating too, and have seen all sorts of health problems disappear, including eliminating acne and other skin problems, digestion problems, improving brain clarity, and of course, losing a lot of body fat!
