I am newly single. I don't want to get into another serious relationship yet. Its time for me. However. When I am alone, I get sad. How can I get past this? I spend time with my friends as much as possible to avoid being sad, but I want to be at the point where I am happy even when no one else is around. How can I do that? Has anyone else gotten over this hump? How can I learn to love the single me?

I am in the same situation. When I get sad I am reminded of the REO Speedwagon song "Keep pushin." The lyrics offer some good advice.

I agree that it's important to keep your mind on other things. It keeps you from feeling lonely and sad.

I like books, DVDs and listening to podcasts. I think there is a difference between intentional entertainment and just planting yourself in front of the tube, or radio, passively taking in whatever is on. If I choose the show I am being proactive. If I let others decide, I am being passive, and passivity leads to depression.

I also like to spend time with family and friends. But I agree that it's important to enjoy time alone. I may be strange, but I LOVE my apartment. After 13 years of sharing everything with someone else, I have a place that's just MINE again. I can keep it however I want. I get to make ALL the decisions. That's very liberating.

Also, I plan to start attending a singles group. Not to find someone special, but for the companionship. Singles groups are run out of chuches and don't require church attendance to join. They have pre-planned activities and are a great way to meet people a few nights a week.

That should help me stay balanced in my new "single" life.

I hope this helps.

I really love being single. I think it is just a matter of enjoying your own company and finding connection in ways other than a relationship.

I spend time talking to people I meet, hanging out with friends, my hobbies, my dog and anything else I want to try. There are tons of people that you come across on a daily basis who you can talk to to feel less alone. There are a million things I'll bet you've been wanting to try "one day" that you now have time to try. Take a class that you've been wanting to take. Classes are great ways to meet people.

Good luck finding happiness.

Well, your are in a difficult position. I think that you need to become more emotionally self-reliant. If you have friends, you are never really alone, even if they are not there in the room with you. You have people who like you and enjoy your company. You're not alone. That's one perspective.

If you feel like you are getting seriously depressed, there are several medications out there that can help you. I would ask your doctor about it.

As much as you might not want to hear this...i know i did not at the time. Jesus can take all you bad feelings away. Pray for salvation and help. He loves you and wants to see you fulfilled and happy alone or in a relationship. I did that when all else failed and he helped me. Hey good weekend and good luck. p.s. jesus is there and wants to show you how. all u do is ask.

This is typical for people who are dependent in nature. Take the time to get to know yourself, ask yourself the tough questions. You might find that you like yourself! After that point, being single is a blessing.

You have to love yourself the most. Know that you are in the best company when your by yourself. This happens over time not overnight. You'll get there if you can change your mindset and try to think more positively.

i have been unmarried for almost a 12 months, it really is the first time in 6 years in spite of a pair months in between 2 relationships. I delight in it because i'm no longer tied down. with somewhat of luck sometime i will locate someone who should be with me, yet no longer tie me down.

= D
I'm SUCH a girl, but I love listening to whatever music I want to (Jewel, Fiona, Bob, jazz....), eating ice cream, and working out whenever I want to.
And the best part is you don't NEED to be worried about anyone else, just yourself.
