Mark A posted pretty good site to start with.anoter site would be : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_language . bulgarian languige is different then the russian, but somewhat similar. bulgarian is a slavic languige, which would explain ,why russian is similar to it. even closer to bulgarian, would be serbian,or macedonian. in recent times, there are a lot of foreign words coming into use in the bulgarian languige.but most are "adopted" for bulgarians to use, so ,sometimes that may be confusing for an outsider. the reason ( i think) why most westerners think that russian and bulgarian languiges are the same is, that, both countries have close ties, especialy in the recent past. bulgarians were required to study russian as part of the educational system. i think that would apply for most of the countries of the former "soviet block". so, when a bulgarian goes abroad ( in the past),and is asked what languiges does he/she speaks, the answer was almost always "bulgarian and russian". i think thats the reason why, most outsiders think that the two are the same.its a common perseption, which i find to be still verry well existing .
bulgarian languige isnt too easy to learn, but many foreigners living in bulgaria, have learned it pretty well. if you are planning to move there,or visit, its also helpfull,if you know any other european languiges. german and french are proticularly popular with older generations. those were prefered foreigner languiges to study ,back then. many of the younger generation do try to learn, and many of them know quite few words in english.
also, with the advent of the computers and especialy the internet, english is being used more and more. most of the bulgarians who use computers, write emails, adds,or use messengers, with english alphabet, which can be further confusing.lol. i found myself blinking hopelessly several times too, recently.
hopefully,that sheds some light.

The language is Bulgarian. Russian is spoken in Russia and a form of Russian is spoken in Ukraine. it is a little obvious. there is a big chance that some people in Bulgaria speak Russian as well.
