A guy does not always do the proposing. My husband and I have been married for 29 years. Our decision to get married was a natural course of the development of our relationship. We didn't have any of that with the guy proposing down on one knee with the girl being all surprised and flustered. We felt it was the right thing to do and what we both wanted. I know several women who proposed first, but I also know several other couples who just decided together to get married. Some of the couples I know who got married after the guy did the proposing are now divorced. Each couple is different and there is no "correct" way for a proposal to happen.

Some have. But in history its always been men to do the proposing. This is for a great many reasons. The start of which was that women were basically property. Proposals were a way of acquiring that property and marriage more of a contractual thing between the father and the future husband. Lands and items were exchanged. There were things to gain that went along with a woman. Dowery.
In nature man is just naturally more agressive than women 90% of the time. A pissed off women is another story entirely. Today's society all bets are off, but mass majority of proposals are still done by men. Why? Consider this...
Love is a little different for men and women. A man will think nothing of spending his time and money on a woman he cares for and wants to be with. Its his way of woo'ing her. If he takes a chance and goes after her. Men may enjoy the one that willingly walks up and plops on their lap, hey free is great. But its the one he can't have, the one that he has to chase, that is usually the one he marries.
Its just something in nature. Now, as a woman in this day and age, if you ask him a couple of things might happen. Either he'll be thrilled... which the chance is remote, or he'll be outright stunned. You get into stepping on a guy's pride and insulting his masculinity a little bit. It can get touchy. Some men are okay with women that pay for the movie. Others are not.
My advice in this regard is always wait for him. Because if he doesn't ask... he's not ready. Its that simple. If he is, he'll ask. A lot of men are a little intimidated by marriage. Its not something a majority of them dream about from childhood. Its not their fairy tale. If you put yourself out there, you're allowing him to drop you. If you don't and he disappoints you anyway, then you are still on the rise. Its just not a good idea generally for a woman to chase a man, pay for everything for him, propose to him. Look at everything you've ever heard about kept men. Look at Britney's Speer's last relationship. Prime example.
Always make him invest in you. You're worth it and he needs to know it.

The times are changing and women do propose to men. I think that it is mostly tradition that keeps more women from doing it. I see it the same way as asking someone out, some women have no problem asking out a guy, while others feel it is still the guy's responsibility. I feel if you want something then you go and get it.... and if that thing happens to be getting married then you should propose and not wait for the guy to do it.

Guys propose to girls because it's a tradition. It's always been this way. Yet times are changing and there are women out there bold enough to pop the big question.

I think Brittany spears proposed to K-fed (ewwww)
I do not know why but I just think it is traditional for the guy to propose, i mean i guess there are exceptions, but think about it, is is your dream to get on your knees and propose or for him to get on his knees and propose? As a guy proposes a girl cries but a guy would just sit there and laugh or stare. Plus the guy gives the engagement ring to the girl, guys only have one ring, the girls have two what would the girl give?
I hope my guy proposes=) Hope I helped!

Because the Girl usually wants to get married, the guy is more in for it for just having someone (maybe sleeping with).
The guy usually proposes because it takes him a lot longer to WANT to get married, if the girl asks him to marry her, then the guy might not be ready yet. But still say yes to not upset her. And that's how it gets bad.
(The girl Wants the Guy to WANT to marry her, not just to marry him.) If u know what I mean. ...thanks for reading.

Its just traditional. In the past, a girl had no choice in who she would marry so a man would ask and she would accept. THe tradition has just been passed on to today.
And a girl can propose to a guy; its just rare.

So the woman wouldn't be blamed for pressuring/forcing/making him live the married life. If the guy proposes then all his misery in marriage can only be blamed on his own idea to propose!
