i have a lite-on combo sohc-4836k drive ,and it says firmware upgrade requires downloadable software from internet but I cant find any upgrades,

dude... it updates the drive... but you cant add new software to be able to burn dvd-r... your on drugs dude, lol, w/ a cd drive, the closest you could get to video is a VCD, i'm afraid that your going to have to buy yourself a dvd-r drive... hopefully an external one, so you dont have to open up your comp...

You cannot burn DVDs with that drive...it will only burn CDs.
