Yikes - so many deceptive answers!
No wonder men have so much trouble trusting women.
I think Lulu is about the only one who got this one right.
BE HONEST - Tell him that you don't like him romantically, and what ever you do, Don't tell him you'd still want to be friends unless you really intend to, and be prepared that he's going to have to go through a grieving process before he can act normally around you - so it may take a while to build that friendship.
If you think his ego can handle it, then do him a big favor and tell him the real reason why you aren't interested in him. It may be something he's not aware of, and may want to change about himself to give him better chances in the future... Or it may be that he needs to look for a different type of girl... But either way, the whole "It's not you, it's me" is just a pile.

Honesty...
Others will give you answers that will be ok, but you know you have to be honest first. If you choose to be deceptive, or play games with him... it'll backfire.
His heart will break, it will hurt him.
The only thing you can do is to do it kindly as possible, and tell him the truth that you are not interested.
It is better than leading him on, and playing mind games with him.
You will be a better person for it.

There really is no kind way to tell someone you don't like him,
"that way", unless you go with the old, "its not you, its me" routine, that you would like to have him as a friend, that you and he are just in different places in your lives at this time, etc. etc. Be nice, but be firm.

If he asks you on another date, be mysterious and say that you are VERY involved with someone, you can't talk about it due to circumstances, you are sorry if you led him on but you were feeling lonely at that one moment and you would appreciate him keeping your secret confidential. If he presses you for more information, get all teary-eyed and say "Please. Be a friend to me and just let it go for now".

Just tell him that you want to start a relationship with another person and you think that it's going really good. Start saying things that make him not want to be with you.

it's going good but I'm very sorry but i can't keep seeing you.
i rather tell you now cause if you fall in love with me i wouldn't want to break your heart.
I'm sorry but it's over.

Use the old but goody line:
"I think we shouldn't go out anymore, but hey,can we still be friends?"
Good luck.
