My friend is a guy with real long hair and he's had it like that for years. He's thinking it's time to cut it though. What would be a good haircut he should get?

With someone having long hair for a long time, I would suggest getting a cut a little above the shoulders where it's still a little long, this way if he doesn't like it, it won't devistate him, and if he does he can always go shorter.

Take him to a beauty salon, or barber, they can figure it out. Knowing what would go best for his frame and features, they will only know. What shape is his face? And what color is his hair and eyes???
