I meant to say what is the amount before tax. Tax was included in the amount of $199.83. Thanks!

divide 199.83 by 106.5 and multiply that answer by 6.5

I'm not sure if you're saying the former or latter, but hopefully you'll get the answer:

1) If the 199.83 EXCLUDES tax, then you simply multiply 199.83 x 1.065 for the new total of 212.82...that's the total with tax now

or

2) if the 199.83 INCLUDES tax and you're trying to separate the item from the tax, you would divide the 199.83 by 1.065 for an item total of 187.63. The difference between 199.83 and 187.63 is the tax (12.20.) You can double check by multiplying the 187.63 x 1.065 and you'll be right back up/near the total number.

$12.98 is the tax amount...you multiply $199.83 x 6.5 = 1298.895...move the decimal two spaces to the left.
