Does Electric Shock Therapy Hurt

Some people have bad headaches, memory loss (some mild, some major, some short term, some long term..) medical staff will tell will it's short term and the headache will be mild. I talk to a women one time who had it..she remembered nothing for the last 3 years at all.. I think it's barbaric and cruel...Yes, you are sedated and they send electricity through your brain that is supposed to shock everything back to normal...if that's true, you would not need 8-10 treatments usually done 3 times a week...just stick your finger in a light socket..it's cheaper. If it's works so well, you would not still medication...however, everyone who takes ECT still has to take meds..the reason they recommend ECT is because the meds haven't been working..DUH so why give them meds AFTER ECT...ECT basically induces a seizure in the brain.

No it does not hurt but read this : "leading researchers in the UK and in the United States are making an extraordinary claim: EST works by causing brain cells to be renewed. It has been known since the mid-1990s that new nerve cells (neurones) form throughout a person's life in the hippocampus, a brain structure known to be involved in memory and emotion. An American team led by Professor Ronald Duman at Yale university, and others, suggest that depression, particularly if it is stress-associated, results from the death of vulnerable neurones in a region of the hippocampus called CA3. Some of the features seen in depression, such as poor concentration and memory, could reflect this loss of nerve cells - indeed, brain scans of severely depressed patients show that the hippocampus is smaller than it should be. Both antidepressants and ECT have been shown to induce brain cells to produce a protein called brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), which promotes the growth, repair and resilience of neurones. It has been observed that, following ECT, new neurones form and existing ones sprout new connections.

No, it does not hurt. I have had it twice.

They put you to sleep and add a muscle relaxant so that your body does not get injured when you experience the shock and convulse.

When you wake up, you might have a headache. I had a headache and felt like I wanted to throw up. I took a nap and I felt better.

The process to put you asleep takes longer than the actual shock.

In the old days they did not use a muscle relaxant, so that is why you can see people jerk and shake in old videos. Today, nothing like that....

Yes and no. The drugs make you consciously not remember the pain but subconsciously your brain makes you react as though you have had a painful experience. What does that mean? I'll give you an example. You are put under for surgery and cut open. You don't consciously remember the experience but your body knows it was cut open and certain thoughts and behaviors reflect this.

No, they knock you out. But you will probably have a terrible headache after wards. There are other side effects that can occur, too, like emotional changes, crying, becoming violent, drooling.
